Paddy Donovan Faces Awkward Test Against Karen Chukhadzhian In Germany
The talking is nearly over in Mannheim and both Karen Chukhadzhian and Paddy Donovan looked ready for business at Thursday’s weigh-in.
Both men came in at exactly 146.5lbs ahead of Friday night’s 12-round welterweight clash at the SAP-Arena, and neither sounded like they expected an easy night’s work.
Ukraine’s Chukhadzhian admitted the fight feels like a crossroads moment in his career, which honestly isn’t hard to understand. He’s already shared the ring twice with Jaron Ennis and has spent years hovering around world level without quite breaking through fully.
Donovan, meanwhile, looked relaxed but focused. The Irishman said he was happy to be in Germany, but made it clear sightseeing was nowhere near the agenda.
“I want to put on a show, this is a sink or swim fight,” Donovan said.
That line probably sums the fight up perfectly. Donovan still has plenty of supporters who believe he’s one of the best talents at welterweight, but Chukhadzhian is exactly the kind of opponent who exposes flaws if you switch off for even a round or two.
The Ukrainian can make fights awkward fast. He moves well, breaks rhythm and doesn’t hand opponents clean openings very often. Donovan will likely want to force the pace and keep the fight from drifting into a tactical grind.
It also feels like Donovan needs this one badly after the messy fallout from the Lewis Crocker fight. A convincing win in Germany would steady things immediately and throw him straight back into the world title picture.
Main Event
Karen Chukhadzhian (26-3-0) vs Paddy Donovan (14-2-0)
Welterweight – 12 Rounds
Weights:
Karen Chukhadzhian – 146.5lbs
Paddy Donovan – 146.5lbs
Co-Main / Key Fights
Devrim Goekduman (13-0-0) vs Franklyn Dwomoh (9-0-0)
IBF European Lightweight Title – 10 Rounds
Two unbeaten fighters finally getting matched properly. Somebody loses their “0” here and that alone usually brings a different energy.
Weights:
Devrim Goekduman – 134.3lbs
Franklyn Dwomoh – 133.8lbs
Emanuel Odiase (10-0-0) vs Nick Webb (19-3-0)
IBF European Heavyweight Title – 10 Rounds
Odiase has looked dangerous so far, but Nick Webb is experienced enough to ask questions. At heavyweight, things can change quickly once the punches start landing clean.
Weights:
Emanuel Odiase – 245.8lbs
Nick Webb – 279.9lbs
Other Title Fights
Alexander Okafor (3-0-0) vs Elija Uelkuseven (8-0-0)
BDB German Cruiserweight Title – 10 Rounds
Still a bold move from Okafor considering he only has three professional fights. Uelkuseven already has decent experience for this level.
Non-Title Undercard
Peter Kadiru (22-1-0) vs Senad Gashi (34-4-0)
Heavyweight – 10 Rounds
Weights:
Peter Kadiru – 240.3lbs
Senad Gashi – 230lbs
Viktor Jurk (13-0-0) vs Edwin Castillo (13-2-0)
Heavyweight – 8 Rounds
Weights:
Viktor Jurk – 264.5lbs
Edwin Castillo – 246.9lbs
Oluwole Jan Ciosek (4-0-0) vs Shae Green (9-1-1)
Middleweight – 6 Rounds
Ciosek keeps getting matched fairly aggressively early in his career. Green has enough experience to make this awkward if he’s underestimated.
Nelvie Tiafack (3-0-0) vs Mateus Munhoz Da Penha (7-2-2)
Heavyweight – 6 Rounds
Weights:
Nelvie Tiafack – 261lbs
Mateusz Munoz de Penha – 239.6lbs
Edmon Avagyan (debut) vs Patrik Fiala (13-7-2)
Cruiserweight – 4 Rounds
Avagyan makes his professional debut against a man with plenty of rounds under his belt already. Not a complete walkover debut.
The main event still feels like the one that could shape careers either way. Donovan says it’s sink or swim. Chukhadzhian says it’s a crossroads fight. Usually when both fighters are talking like that, somebody ends up having a very long night.
