Thread: Amazing experiment - Diet Coke and Mentos. You have to try it !

Was reading in paper today about the amazing reaction you get if you put several Mentos into a 2 litre bottle of Diet Coke at the same time. Apparently you can get a coke fountain up to 5 metres high.

Didn't believe it till I checked on Youtube and saw all the videos of people doing it.

As for all this science gobuldygoup we just used to get a cheap 2ltr bottle of coke or something for about 10p and after shaking it up for ages stot it off the floor/drop it off a tall building, roll it under a lorry...

Sad bastards that we were we got about 2 pounds worth once... :P

ah just watched the videos... so so... considering they put mentos in it... means the bottle looses all teh fizz though so it wasn't really much better than when we'd shake them up/drag them along fences/play foot ball with the bottle for ages first....

Good thing about dirty cheap pop is that its full of air so you don't get as much drink as you'd think
edit: ^that by itself sounds stupid... more compressed air = more pressure.

There is another amazing experiment which is similar to this one, but has even better results.

What you do is mix ammonium fertiliser with another nitrate-based compound.

Then insert a detonator and a timing device ... hey presto.

I was reading in the paper today about the amazing reaction you get from this, apparantly it is all the rage in some middle-eastern countries, although it seems to be catching on in London and New York and places like that now.

Trendy young people are even accessorising this by combining the chemicals in a specially made 'belt' or waistcoat rather than the more traditional rucksacks.

There is aTV programme where you can see the amazing results of this - News at 10, I think it's called.

I ried that today. Man it almost worked. We had two cokes and two packs of Mentos. The first time we put the mentos in and the damn thing exploded before I could get the cap on. The second time we put the mentos in a 7-11 back, put the bag in the bottle, put the cap on and shook it all up so the mentos came out. I put the cap on to tight though and it didn't open. So then I picked it up and I swear to god I felt the bottle was going to explode in my hand. It was a lot. SO then I slammed loosened the cap a little bit and slammed it. The thing shot 10 feet straight in the air then turned and shot sideways through the air and came back down. It went on forever though. Damn if it wouldn't have turned we would have been set but the coke bottle turned. I got a shitload of soda on a brand new set of clothes though so that pissed me off.
