WBM Poll: Pacquiao new pound for pound #1
Tom Thompson
07/11/2006 - New Orleans
The WBM Pro Boxing Poll has voted Manny Pacquiao as the new number one pound for pound fighter in the world, replacing Floyd Mayweather Jr at the top.
Since all voting in the poll is private and individual, it can only be speculated that Pacquiao moved ahead of Mayweather because of his willingness to fight good quality opponents this year including Erik Morales, Oscar Larios and another match with Morales later this year.
Winky Wright remained ranked third in the mythical poll despite his draw with Jermain Taylor, however the middleweight champ moved from sixth to fourth.
Bernard Hopkins entered the P4P rankings at number ten based on his dominance of Antonio Tarver while Kostya Tszyu slipped out of the poll altogether due to inactivity.
The objective of the WBM Pro Boxing Poll is to recognize the achievements of deserving professional boxers by giving voice to boxing journalists around the world.
The WBM (World Boxing Media) has over forty voting members from the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Italy, Panama, Australia and New Zealand. Membership is open to any professional media person covering professional boxing whether they are from print, television, radio or the internet.
