    Default Running long distances

I'm in the Army and I was able to run 8 minute miles for 5 miles. I want to improve this time. Is this an advantage in boxing when your able to run long distances ?

No not really, title fights are 36 mins every 3 mins you get 1 mins rest after every round. You should run or train accordingly, one of my favorite ways is phartlec with a whistle on the track. But you have to know your athlete be it a Boxer Runner or triathlete or whatever. The rest period is down to you, plus the specifics you reqiure. If you can get a heart monitor attached to a phone youve cracked it, then you can monitor every move they make. when to pushit and when not to.

running can be great in getting you fit or fitter but always do things propa, make sure not to do to much to soon, if you run 5 miles a day do just jump to 8 miles a day, there are many injurys to look out for, i had to have surgery on my shins which because of such things

always train hard but ALWAYS TRAIN SAFE

running and boxing in the ring are 2 different animals...I had a boxer that was a HS Cross country runner turning out sub 6 minute miles...and for a long time he was winded after going just 2 or 3 rounds in the ring sparring......I had him start focusing on sprints 50-60 yards(hopefully uphill) for 20 or so reps and this helped out immensely.....also incorporating explosion drills..like jumping jacks as fast as you can for 1-2 minutes or jumping rope as fast as you possibly can for 2-3 minutes or rapid firing(punches) on the heavy bag for 2-3 miinutes at a time will help as well.... good luck hope this helps....
It feels good to be back home.

the boxers at our gym have stopped running distances to control weight, they now power walk, as effective less risk of injury. They now do sprint work for cardio.
