Younger brother Rafael announces move to 122!
Universally recognized as two of the best pound for pound fighters in the world and one of only four sets of Mexican brothers in history to win a world title, Juan Manuel and Rafael Marquez of Mexico City will be showcased on Saturday, August 5th at the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa in Lake Tahoe (formerly known as Caesars Tahoe). Long recognized as one of the most talented featherweights in the world, Juan (44-3-1, 33 KOs) will take on Terdsak Jandarng (24-1, 15 KOs) for the WBO interim featherweight title in the main event. Younger brother Rafael (35-3, 31 KOs) will defend his IBF bantamweight belt against Silence Mabuza (19-1, 15 KOs) in a highly anticipated rematch.

At a press conference in Reno on Thursday, Juan stated, “It is going to be a great fight. Thailand is full of terrific fighters and Terdsak is one of the best.” A former IBF and WBA featherweight champion, Juan Marquez, who is ranked #3 in the WBO, is coming off a 12-round decision loss to WBA champion Chris John on April 3, 2006. Jandarng is ranked #2 in the WBO, has won six straight since suffering his only loss Joan Guzman in a WBO featherweight elimination bout in August 2005. Jandarng responded, “I will beat (Juan) Marquez. I have a lot of respect for him. It will be a great honor to beat the best man in the division and win the title.” Mabuza, who is fighting younger brother Rafael in the co-main event, stated: “I have business to finish with (Rafael) Marquez. I need to close the chapter this Saturday night.” Marquez retained his IBF title a sixth time with a fourth-round TKO over Mabuza in November 2005. Marquez scored a knockdown in the first and won every round before the slugfest was halted because of cuts 2:08 into the fourth round. Rafael responded: “I am clean a fighter and I don’t use my head to hurt an opponent. I just use my fists. On Saturday, I will close the chapter that Silence still thinks is open.”

Rafael Marquez also surprised the audience by announcing: “This will be my last fight at 118 pounds. Let every champion at 122 pounds know that I am ready to fight.” Rafael Marquez is regarded as one of the most talented pound for pound in the world, with knockout victories over former world champions Mark Johnson, Tim Austin and Mauricio Pastrana, therefore his move to the super bantamweight division will be welcome news in a division that once hosted Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao.

The event is appropriately titled “Double Trouble” and is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC. This will be MontBleu’s first outdoor boxing event in more than 12 years and the bouts will be broadcast this Saturday on Showtime (9pm ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), continuing the 20th anniversary of Showtime Championship Boxing.
Awesome set of fights & both tuff tests.
