Gatti wants to go out with a bang - v Hatton

    http://www.secondsout.com/usa/lusal....s=473&cs=20078

By Ant Evans: No big name fighter wants to go out on a loser and it will surprise no-one that Arturo Gatti, the fading two division world champion who made himself a folk hero to millions with his blazing style, is considering one final fight after suffering his latest defeat.

Gatti, now 34, was beaten down in nine rounds by welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir on July 22. Gatti boxed well early on, he was quick of hand and nimble on his feet and yet, even against a relatively light puncher like the Argentinean, his balance was overthrown whenever he took a clean shot.

Despite giving everything he had left, the 'Thunder' failed. And, yes, Gatti has come back from losses before to reinvent himself at a higher weight or with a modified style but with his punch resistance obviously floundering it was assumed that Gatti would be retiring from boxing.

However, Gatti's trainer Buddy McGirt told SecondsOut: "Arturo could probably have one more fight. I don't think he'll want to go out like he did against Baldomir."

And according to McGirt, boxing's warrior-born won't be interesting in some glorified exhibition against an opponent selected for slaughter.

McGirt said: "I don't think it would be an easy fight. He would want to go out with a bang, not just ask people to pay to see him and have an easy fight. That's not Arturo.

"He'll pick someone like Ricky Hatton, someone who will really make him fight. That's how he'd like to go out. I think he'd still want to fight Hatton, as long as it was at 147lbs. Arturo can't make 140lbs anymore no matter what (he does in the gym). Baldomir is a huge 147lbs fighter but Hatton isn't. That could still be a great fight."

Hatton, meanwhile, is still considering his options in the wake of the Gatti defeat. The reigning WBA welterweight champion and consensus 'world linear' junior welterweight champion will return to action on December 9 but co-promoters Fight Academy and Banner Promotions have yet to announce whether the Hitman will be defending his WBA 147lbs belt against No.1 contender Oktay Urkal, or move back down to 140lbs (10stone) to face unbeaten Urango in attempt to reclaim the IBF title he was forced to give up several months back.

The later move is thought to set-up an early 2007 super-fight at 140lbs against Jose Luis Castillo.

Although it would probably do well on HBO, whether or not a Gatti fight is still of interest to Hatton remains to be seen.

But McGirt still believes that, against a smaller man than Baldomir who doesn't have the pure boxing style of Floyd Mayweather, Gatti could still upset the Hitman. He said: "Arturo was boxing well against Baldomir. I had the fight even going into that final round but Baldomir was just too strong, there's no ifs nor buts about it.

"It wasn't that but when you fight a bigger guy, y'know, if he drops water on the rock for long enough the rock will break. But Hatton isn't a bigger man."

This disgusted me so much that I wanted to start a poll over it...just to see what you all thought.

Please...answer with whatever you want...but for the record...the above read is gotdam ridiculous IWO!

I love it. Maybe not the best matchup but....it would be a WAR. Possibly a FOTY just because of the styles. If he wants to go out with a bang, go out with Hatton He obviously isn't intent on going out on top, just with a war. Love it.

i think it could be a fair move for both, they both respect and like eachother , and gatti wants to win against hatton and quit and hatton wants to beat one of his heroes, although i dont know what it will come to as hatton had said this wont happen now that he lost think bout it tho gatti is dont and its another fairly easy big name on the record!! good luck to gatti on findin a fight to quit on, jus dont think he'll beat hatton at this time.

Now I'm not saying that Gatti has earned this fight based off his Baldomir fight. I'm not saying this fight has any signifigance for Hatton, it would just be a great fight. I mean, Hatton has more legit opponents out there waiting for him but this would be a great fight so I wouldn't be upset if it got made.

a fight that would be a real thrill would be Arturo Gatti -vs- Ben Tackie,

a slightly more competitive match-up. I think Hatton's work rate would over whelm Gatti. where as Tackie is aggressive , but not stuck to you like Velcro. Gatti could take a step back and catch his breath from time to time, what do you guys think?

I disagree with this fight being made. Gatti is battle worn,it would be bad for him and what would beating this Gatti prove?? I think Hatton would stop him.

Apparently...I'm the only one that's with Wacko...this is total bullshat!!!

Gatti just got knocked the fwock out! He looked horrible against Baldo & I might add...he looked even worse against Mayweather...so everyone's gonna scream for him to fight Hatton?

Fwock that horse shat!!! If you all want to see an all out war...a real fight...then you should be clammoring for Hatton to fight Collazo again.

A Gatti Hatton fight would end up being an even bigger steaming pile of poop than the Quartey robbery we were all subjected to!

I tell you all...you are on further notice! Wacko is watching you all in bewilderment!!!

What can I say? I'm bewildered.

I basically agreed with you Wack,Gatti can't keep getting these shots!!! Look at how many he has had and at this stage in his career,it's a bad bad move.

    Agreed.

There is no sense in this fight other than HBO's greed, cable revenues, & the fighter's cashing in.

Gatti has no title...Baldo's got em. Hatton should be trying to secure a fight with Baldo...unless Floyd actually has that fight in the bag.

Someone needs to tell Hatton... "What happens if you lose to him? How will you explain yourself?"

Not only is foolish for Gatti, but what the hell would Hatton risk getting caught with a good one and KO'd by a man who will retire after the fight even if he wins it.
