No protest from Peter camp!

As recently reported, the WBC has ordered an immediate rematch between James “Lights Out” Toney (69-5-3, 43 KO’s) and Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter (27-1 22 KO’s). Their September 2 clash ended in a controversial split decision after one of the better heavyweight fights in the last few years.

Even though the first fight was billed as a WBC final eliminator with the winner to become the mandatory challenger for Oleg Maskaev, the WBC ordered Peter and Toney to fight again after a successful protest by Toney's promoter Goossen Tutor. Fightnews contacted Samuel Peter’s manager Ivaylo Gotzev to get a few comments on this development concerning his fighter.

“Are we going to protest? No we are not," said Gotzev. "As a matter of fact, we are all excited. If the money is proper. We are very excited about a rematch. Because, you know, I’m not a hypocrite. When I say I stand behind the best fighters in boxing, I really mean it. We don’t just talk the talk. We walk the walk. I thought it was a great fight the first time around, so why not give the media and boxing analyst what they want? Because they demand a rematch.”

Gotzev also spoke about the possibility of bringing the rematch to Nigeria. When asked where the fight will take place, Gotzev responded, “It doesn’t matter. There is a possibility this time we will take him to Nigeria. We want to know what those judges have to say then. Really, wherever this fight happens, it’s going to happen for the right reason and that is because it was an exciting fight the first time. I’m feeling such bias by the writers. It was a great fight. Two judges saw the fight and gave a huge margin to Samuel Peter, so therefore, they were obviously decent judges. It was a fair decision. Was it a good fight? Who can deny that? Should we do it again? Apparently so. We look forward to it.” Ivaylo continued, “That is a plan. We’ll take him to Nigeria this time. No protest. We’re not protesting…They’ve done all the protesting. We’re just going to do the fighting, IN the ring, where it belongs, not outside.”

Of course a massive problem presents itself if Toney wins by a controversial points win next time.

What happens then? Another rematch? Best of three......best of five?

Lets hope that whoever wins it's decisive although to be honest I picture it being pretty much the same again next time around, all depends on who the judges fancy.

even though toney actually won the first bout, its declared sam peter.....
so say toney wins the second...whether close/controversial or not...peter would want a rubber match im assuming!!
but then that probably wouldnt be an eliminator still im guessing it would be after the title shot!
really hope toney wins.... he looked a bit better for this last fight and i think he wants this win and the title so he should train well!!

Peter should win more convincingly this time around.

He's the one who had more to gain from the first fight in terms of learning curve and improving himself. Toney's already "arrived" at his spot; he won't change up as much as Peter will to adjust and improve.

Hopkins-Taylor comes to mind ... not that I'm comparing any of the fightes except to note that both Taylor and Peter are still learning and improving. So a second fight would more likely be better for them if the more established fighter were not to alter strategy.

Hope not so. If Pete and team thinks he's worth more, Big Peter should have have stopped Toney.

Hope not so. If Pete and team thinks he's worth more, Big Peter should have have stopped Toney.

Well that may happen or it might not.

Toney is going to come in lighter and Peter is going to come in heavier. Peter will either not hit Toney, or hurt him badly

Yeah....time to play "The Price is Right"....IMO Peter's camp will ask for more than 50% and Toney won't take it like that.

Toney doesn't have that many choices in his 'professional' career. I think that bilbo pointed it out best that this will become a matter of
redundancy if there isn't a significant outcome to another bout. It has to be incredibly decisive - via K.O.

Trouble is only Peter can win by KO, no way Toney can stop Peter.

Toney will probably perform exactly as he did first time around. Personally I felt he won the fight by at least two rounds, but the judges saw thing differently.

If Toney fought the exact fight again it's really anybody's guess what way the decision will go, and if Toney got it, Peter and his camp would sure as hell be complaining.

Personally I'm against a rematch on principle. Even though I'm a JT fan and even though I think he won the fight, it makes boxing a joke when the outcome of a fight can overridden and the winner is forced to fight again.

Can you imagine this happening in any other sport, one team knocks another team out of a cup/superbowl and the losing side says it isn't fair so they play again, it's just bad for sport in general I think.

Part of the drama and tension involved in a fight should be that the decision is final, nowadays it seems that as long as both fighters finish the fight then a rematch is practically guaranteed.

I agree! Don't think that Toney packs the punch at HW. Although he was said to have stunned Peter on occasions, it wasn't anything that would have set up a possible stoppage.
It's important for both fighters to stay active, and if staying active means fighting each other again, then that seems like another interesting match-up. It will also prove to be gauge to test how much Peter has learned from the first fight, as he is still young and a bit green in terms of quality opposition.
I see it as a win-win for Peter: He's still young and in contention for a title shot. Even if he lost a rematch with Toney, he still would have 24 Rounds of experience with one of the craftiest fighters on the planet.
Toney's back is against the wall on this one. He doesn't have many options; so it would be best if he jumped all over the rematch. Although I think his mouth has made him a lot of enemies in the sport. James doesn't seem to have any brains when it comes to the politicking of boxing.

This fight needs to end in one of the two GETTING THEEEE FWOCKED KNOCKED OUT!!!!!
Thats the only way there would be NO reason what so ever to have another fight....

The WBC ruled that if it goes to a purse bid, the split will be 60% for Peter

I don't like enforced rematches, but there just should have been one anyway, clear rematch fight, I'd guess maybe 10-20 percent of the boxing public thought that Peter won so its a clear rematch fight.

And hey it was an exciting heavyweight fight, how often does that actually happen? Before that it was Lyachovich-Brewster, other than that heavyweight fights are for the most part garbage.
