WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai "Giant Russian" Valuev had been attempting to contact Monte "Two Gunz" Barrett since Sunday morning to make sure Barrett was okay after losing to Valuev by technical knockout in the 11th round in Chicago Saturday night. Valuev reached Barrett on his mobile phone this morning and told him through a translator that he wished him a quick recovery and good luck in the future. The translator said that Barrett seemed "touched" by Valuev's call, and he told the translator to tell Valuev that he was in the best shape of his life, so this means he passed a true test on Saturday night.

thats the great thing about boxing and boxers... i think its prob like for every ten arrogant idiot cats in the boxing game you get one gentleman...
i love to see a guy be a gent and show some compassion for a fighter and be cool at the end of a fight , shake the kids hand etc... now thats pure gent after youve had a bashup you dont find it nowhere but boxing and few other contact sports... god lad!

jus thought of a couple examples i thought i might pop in...

the older tyson (usually after a fight :P ) picking up that big guy that got back up then started falling everywhere cos his legs had gone... sorry forget the kids name...

and after the lewis fight when the fight that had been brewing for years had finished and i suppose it must have been a huge wieght of his shoulders and he could jus be pleasant to lennox

And finally B-hop after the tarver fight (bieng supposedly his last fight) he leaned through the ropes and told emanuel steward he wished jermaine all the best and had no hard feelings...

Agreed....Nik is a scholar of sorts a very Intellectual deep person loves literary masterpieces and poetry even writes his own Poems...So it dosent suprise me that he would extend a classy gesture toward Monte Barrett...

I like that he seems to genuinely appreciate his position and is not taking his championship ride for granted. He might not be a huge puncher but he seems incredibly strong. Although Barret always looks like he's of balance as his fights go into the later rounds. Now I come to find out how much class he has and it's gonna be hard to root against him.

That is a class act....I think the guy is just greatful to everyone for what he has...From what I have heard he and hia family lived in a two room apt just 2 years ago....For some reason I don't think that fighting is something he has wanted so much as something he has been able to do. Sadly IMO he will end up another carnera forgotten once he is exposed

Mike was one of my boyhood heroes, and one of the things I always liked about him, IMO, was that he was always a classy winner. He always went over and hugged the guy and checked if he was ok. And his remarks after the Lewis fight proved that he was also a gracious loser. I always thought that his comments like child eating were indicative of his pure genious (yes, genious!) at marketing and promoting his own fights. People thought he was crazy for saying that child eating crap, to which I always replied, "if Mike REALLY wanted to eat a child I think he would have done so by now." It always made them stop a minute and think that yeah, maybe he is a good pre-fight BS'er.

Unfortunately part of his legacy was ruined by the Holyfield shit, but I'd have bit the fuck too. Goddam prick headbuts more than a ram. In fact, Conan O'Brien did a spoof of his fights that were all footage of two rams headbutting each other. People overlook the fact that a holyfuk headbut cut mike open good above his left eye.

Side show or not...he has come a long way from the first time I saw him...or the first footage that I had seen of him.

I think the guy's good for the sport period.

We need more sportsmen. I liked it when Gatti and Ward would have their wars and stuff and end up being best buds at the end of the fight. Then when Mosely got beat down by Wright and they'd still be cool. Valuevs a nice guy its just a shame that they are just showing him off as a freakshow.
