    Default Jump Rope time length

I'm trying to up my time length in jump ropes.
What is an ideal time frame to jump rope for an amateur fighter?
I hear pros do it for 15 minutes. But what about training for amateur?
What do you guys do at your gym, or what do you recommend?

I'm asking this because my goal is to aim for a good time frame for preparing for an amateur match. Good shape that is.

Im not sure theres an actual optimal time.
We do it for 20 minutes in my gym, with double jumping and fast jumping and crossovers in between whenever called for 10 seconds or so, keeps things mixed up.
Pick up a book called "Jump Rope Training" by Buddy Lee. Its an interesting read.

To get full effect, you MUST jump rope until you black out. It's got to do with the red corpuscles getting better or something.

Had a one time pro fighter tell me to jump rope for 30 min. He said that is what he did in Amatuers.

Although I don't have a sixer (more like a four-er), I'm in very good shape.
I'm on my way to getting one though.
    I can run, of course.
I can hit the heavybag just as long as everybody, with intensity.
Just about any workout that requires stamina, I'm ok.

But when it comes to jump ropes, damn...
The acidic acid builds under my arch, to the point where I HAVE to stop or I'll fall.
My heart rate is good, it's just this ODD occurance.
On of the trainers told me to stretch the ankles and the arch afterwards and it helps.
I hate when I have to stop roping early, because I'm so proud of my work ethic.

THAT is why I want to build time. I can almost do just about everything with consistency,
speed bag for rounds after rounds... but them damn ropes! haha

20 minutes huh, that's pretty good.
I think I may stick with Joe Frazier's advice in his book
and work my way up to 15 minutes and stay there.
No way in hell I'm going to do 30 minutes!
I'd rather run 2 miles for stamina and jump rope 15 minutes.

Get your arches look at by a podiatrist. I had the same problem, only when walking long distances. Was a real pain, felt like they were ripping apart. Went to a podiatrist, he told me some stretches to do, gave me some insole things to put in my shoes and bada bing bada boom, 3 months later im totally cured.

If your new to it, start off doing 10 minutes a day for about 2-3 weeks.

i wouldn't recommend starting off more than 10 minutes for 1st few weeks as your shin muscles may start to go and they may feel like you've been kicked in them for 3 hours by a Thai fighter who knocks down walls.

in your 2nd-3rd week, youll be able to go for 15 minutes, in the 3rd-4th week, you should be able to do 20 minutes and i wouldn't recommend anymore than 20 minutes, although sometimes I do 30-40 minutes which is probably why I'm so light .

The above was my routine when i hit the wall in my fitness and it changed my fitness level for ever.

    Thanks guys.

Andysutils, even though I can run 5 miles, and work as hard as ever every round.

I barely got comfortable with 3 minutes of jump rope this week. Next week I'm moving up to 4 minutes. Stick with that, then move up to 6 minutes, and so on.

Jamoie, YOU HAVE TO BE RIGHT. This isn't normal.
I'll see if I can see a podiatrist.

I can take pain, because I know I train very hard, but my foot just shuts down.
The arch, the sole, lower inner ankle hurts like hell afterwards,
hurts so much I have to keep walking, because if I sit down
and put no pressure on my feet it hurts worse (throbbing pain), so in the past
I massaged them afterwards. One time I put cold water
on them it hurt so much, it worked too, to keep my mind off of the pain.

the Buddy Lee book is a good read. So with that in mind are you training for endurance or foot speed?

Now ask yourself is boxing slow/continuous for 30 minutes or active for 2/3 minutes?

It's good to build a base level of endurance but I now prefer to work on footwork speed with the jumprope.

How many of you stretch your feet. We use them more than anything, and yet they are forgotten theres some little crackers can be done, solves a lot of problems. I use iron shoes wonderful things I came up with a thing years ago a wobbly board. another one get 2 footballs hands against the wall and stand on them bare footed moving back and forward side to side circles its good fun andteaches you the perception of balance. expect to fall on your arse a few times but its fun.

It takes people different amounts of time to build it up, but its actually not the jumping that makes you tired so quick, its the extra pressure and unrelaxed jumps to make it over the rope that burn you out so quickly because you have not yet learnt to relax enough whilst jumping but that will all fall into place the more you practice.

If you put weights in each of your hands which are the equivalent weight of the rope itself and pretend to skip without the actual rope itself, you'll be able to do it for much longer barely getting tired.

    Some tips for you.

    1. keep your back straight at all times
    2. keep the rope close to your waist
    3. its best to start off hopping with both of your feet simultaneously, this is the easiest method to master.
