The Arizona State Boxing Commission is awaiting results on a blood test Friday by Tommy Morrison, a former heavyweight champion who is seeking a license that would allow him to fight in Phoenix on Jan. 19 in his first bout in the U.S. since he tested positive for the HIV virus more than a decade ago.
John Montano of the commission said he witnessed Morrison undergo the test at a lab in central Phoenix.
Montano said he expects the results sometime this week. advertisement
Morrison has tested negative at least three times, according to Phoenix promoter Peter McKinn, who wants the 38-year-old to appear in a four-round bout on a Top Rank card at Dodge Theatre.
Montano also wants to see Morrison spar. He has been working out at trainer Mike Munoz's gym in north Phoenix.
A commission meeting for consideration of a Morrison application has yet to be scheduled.
If the blood test is negative and Montano approves of Morrison's performance in sparring, the process moves forward.
However, limited time - less than two weeks before the scheduled card - could be a problem. The commission is in no rush to go through a process that figures to be controversial
If the commission considers a Morrison application at a formal meeting, testimony on the HIV virus from medical experts is expected.
McKinn said Top Rank has lined up experts. But the commission is expected to call on a few of its own.
McKinn said he has two heavyweights, both unknown, who are willing to fight Morrison, who has said his initial test for HIV before a 1996 fight in Las Vegas was a false-positive.
"We can't offer either of them a contract until we know whether Tommy can fight," McKinn said.
