Go to hotukdeals and check out the free software thread. I use AVG internet security downloaded from a bit torrent site, no complaints.

Or you could do as Smash suggests and shell out a couple of grand on a new Mac

Depends what you want it for. I wouldnt by a mac purely for web browsing and writting the occasional document, waste of time and money. I'd imagine your Missus needs to have a mac so its a warranted spend.

Funny story from yesterday actually. I was in the local computer shop picking something up and this old fella walks in.

Old Fella "I want one of those apple computers"

Shop "We havent got any Im affraid, we dont support mac's"

Old Fella "We'll Im thinking of getting a computer and which magazine rates mac as the best so thats what I want"

Shop "Have you used a computer before?"

    Old Fella "No"

Shop "To be honest I would suggest you get a budget PC, it will do all the things you want it ti do, I wouldnt recomend a mac for a first time user"

Old Fella "Bollocks to you, which say mac is best so thats what Im getting. Im going to PC World"

    True.

    hahahaha
    Old twat
I just find them so much easier to use and way way faster all round but yeah it's the missus who got it (She's a mac studio manager) and i think she spent £1200 on the screen alone.
If the time came when i had to purchase for myself though i wouldn't go near a PC.
You just get used to the smoothness and really notice the difference (ease of use) when you go back to a PC.
Plus they look cool but granted...are f*cking pricey.
I had a G4 powerbook laptop for sale just a few months ago that people were near on fighting over to buy and sold it for £400.

I worked on an ibook for a woman around the corner, installing OSX, I liked it. If money was no object then I'd have one, I'd go for one of the quad processor monsters with 16gb of ram and 3Tb of hard disks For the home user a PC will win every time though, what are they around about £100 for a budget base unit?

The very same women who had the ibook gave me a motherboard to see if it would be any use in repairing her sisters computer. I told her it was no good and she should come and collect it. She said bin it so I kept it myself and now have a new 2.8Ghz P4 machine, she even left the memory modules attached

Cheers for the advice guys. Googled some stuff and there seems to be quite a bit of free stuff out there. AVG seems to be a well respected one
