larry holmes was 48-0 before he lost even though he should been 50-0

what about chavez he was like 90-0-1 before he lost even though i think he should of had 2 losses before that its still outstanding record

The answer to this is pretty obvious.

It takes about 30 fights for a fighter to establish himself as world class, at which point he starts taking on a higher level of opponent.

Tyson didnt get to cocky.. He was undertrained and underprepared..
I suppose it could be thought as cocky to have underestimated douglas.. But it wasnt really cocky towards douglas as that was just how his career was going at the time..

One thing i have noticed .

    Tyson - Holyfield .
    Chavez - Randall
    Hopkins - Taylor
    Jones - Tarver
    Johnson - Castillio
    Mosely - Forrest
    Ruelas - De la Hoya

All these fighters were softened up by British fighters in the fight before or penultimate fight before they lost .

Moral : dont fight UK fighters they are just too tough .

Much as it pains me to say it, you're right on the button. It wasn't just cockiness on Tyson's part, he was really starting to get into the financial rewards of being a top boxer outside the sport, and enjoying the trappings of celebrity. He's out having expensive meals instead of focussing on the boxing and eating right, and it all detracts from the performance. It was less being cocky and more just not having his head fully in the game.

Willie Pep went 62-0 before losing, then won 72 straight before losing to Sandy saddler, thats impressive!

Most of these guys DESTROYED the British fighter that they faced beforehand.

That's why Willie Pep is a legend, and we'll never see that kind of record again. These guys were fighting far more often than the ones we have today, fighting 2 or 3 times a year, simply because the promoter in those days would take far more money, and even when they reached contender status they wouldn't be making too much money. At the end of the day, money is what makes fighters lose the hunger, and you can make enough to retire on at the top level in 10 fights these days, look at Floyd Mayweather, no point doing something that will get you seriously injured for more than you have to.

Anyone who bases their career around having an invincible persona (ie. guys like Tyson or Naz) whether it was through their own will or not, their losses will be much more scrutinized as opposed to a fighter who has faced adversity earlier in their career.
Unfortunately when your career is based on being unbeatable, so much of the lustre of your persona fades and they find it much harder to bounce back from first defeat.
