Floyd needs little help in portraying himself as the bad guy. He's pretty widely disliked already, and seems resigned to his fate.
Oscar, on the other hand, has spent his whole career aching to be liked, respected, revered...... and has accomplished it pretty well. Like the professional orchestra conductor, Oscar has been incredibly deft at using all the instruments at his disposal in order to achieve his goal.
Now that he has achived "god-like" status with the press and his loyal fan base, Oscar uses his clout masterfully. He has chosen the right opponent (no KO threat), the right weight (right for Oscar, wrong for Floyd)........ and has gone about hyping the fight like never before.
The "White-Hat-Wearing, $1 Million-Smile-Flashing, U.S. Olympic Champion, Bilingual, Media Darling"..... against the "Arrogant, Big Mouth, P4P Champion" who everyone loves to hate.
Oscar wins.... his legacy will be complete. People will forget his losses to Tito, Mosley (twice), and Hopkins. They'll forget his received gift at his only other fight at 160, vs. Felix Sturm. He will have beaten the consensus p4p in the world, at the peak of his powers. Never mind that the guy is almost 20 pounds north of his best weight, and at 154 couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag.
Floyd wins...... he will have beaten a fighter whose best days are behind him. A brave, but old warrior. Shame on Floyd for beating up on a legend!! He will remain the villain, even more disliked than before. He will have proven nothing.
So what's wrong with all this? Everything. First of all, I don't think Floyd is nearly dislikable as say........ Zab Judah. A lot of Floyd's obnoxiousness seems fake, acted, part of the act to hype "The Fight of the "Millenium" (barf). Judah's obnoxiousness is all too real. The man needs to put forth hardly any effort to come off as a first-class jerk. It's a natural gift. Don't get me wrong..... Floyd has plenty of issues on and off the ring. But nowadays, who doesn't? (Oh sorry..... forgot about "Golden Boy"....... (barf)).
On the other hand, you can see some of the cracks in Oscar's facade about a mile away. He seems as real as a 4-dollar bill. With him it's his way, or the highway. Hey, he knows who holds the goose that lays the golden eggs. He does, plain and simple. Had Floyd wanted to have the fight at, say..... 147, Oscar would've said..... "Sayonara, my friend. I don't need you. You need me. People already love me. I have a singing career (barf). I have a legacy. I'm pretty."
So the hype for the "Fight of the History of the Galaxy" goes on, growing bigger and bigger with each passing day, until by the time the date finally rolls around....... time will stand still...... and the heavens will open and shower glory over all......... and blah blah blah, ad nauseum.
So in summary, I'm rooting for PBF by KO. Hopefully the devastating kind. A lucky punch out of nowhere that sits Golden Boy on his Golden A$$, while the referee counts to 10.
