    Default Boxing vs MMA

I can't understand why its so hard for people to grasp the idea that if a boxer is against an MMAist in a boxing rules fight then the boxer wins. If a boxer fights an MMAist in an MMA fight then the MMAist wins.

    Its not rocket science.

People are comparing them because they are combat sports who both use their hands. Thats like comparing rugby and football. Both are field sports and both use balls but you put a rugby player on a football pitch and he wont do dick and vice versa. The only debate left is which one people prefer to watch. Not which one is the most skilful because BOTH require different skill sets and BOTH should be appreciated for what they are...tough combat sports that require a great amount of skill.

Yes boxers are better with their hands. Can we put that one to bed? One thing i will say though is MMA incorporates an element of boxing whereas boxing doesn't incorporate any of the other elements of MMA....which is why its called MMA. Its a mixture of techniques. As far as fighting goes in its most basic term then MMAist are more rounded fighters because they have more of an arsenal.

Also the whole Tyson versus this and that. Tyson (IMO) was never that great. Thats my opinion and i am entitled to it and IMO in an MMA fight against a top HW fighter he would be left wanting. Having said that if fedor fouhgt him in a boxing match even as he is now as an old washed up boxer he would still own Fedor. Once again it comes down to because he's a boxer and the other is an MMAist. Two different sports.

Boxing and MMA deserve equal respect and i give them just that and people who don't have probably never been involved in a combat sport in their life. Its easy to spot wannabe's who spout shyte.

Love em both. Dont hate either.

Yep. and because those concepts are so fundamental, the whole debate between boxing vs. MMA is basically, when you get down to it, just a bunch of people ranting about which ever sport they like better. I don't think those even people know what they're arguing about,it's all just mindless bashing

I'm going to put an end to this Boxing v. MMA debate right now.

I've never really wanted to post this, because it ends embarrassingly for me, but as someone who has DONE boxing and DABBLED in MMA, I'm going to break it down.

I was a pretty good amatuer boxer, 26-1 record when I sustained a series of unfortunate injuries, most of which didn't occur in the ring.

When everything healed up, I had the opportunity to do some MMA style sparring with Andrei Arlovski her in Chicago. Would post the name of the gym, but I don't know if that info is out there and I don't really want to put dude's business "in the street" so to speak.

I'm about 6'3", 225 and Andrei probably had about and inch and 10-15 pounds on me I'm guessing. In other words, size difference was pretty negligible for MMA.

We had a timed sparring session in a ring, (not a cage). For the first minute and forty-five seconds I established myself as the superior striker, landing several punches, a couple of leg kicks, and even defending against a couple of take down attempts. At 1:45 of the session, Andrei went for the shoot, I stepped back and just as I thought I was about to tee off on his head, he switched direction got his shoulder under me, picked me up and slammed me onto the mat at what felt like about 70 mph. He then transitioned seamlessly into an armbar that felt like had he wanted to, he could have literally ripped my arm off and beaten me to death with it. I tapped, at which point he helped me up and told me where I had fkked up with using a boxing stance. Class guy. I also got the impression that if he had a cage to bull me into, the fight would likely have ended quicker.

Now, I still prefer boxing. It's my favorite sport. While I watch both, I'll always like boxing more than MMA. I also believe that on the whole, at least for now, boxing has the higher level athletes. That said, BY NO MEANS DOES EITHER BOXING OR MMA TAKE MORE SKILL THAN THE OTHER.

It's rediculous to think that a boxer without cross training would have success with the top guys in MMA or vice versa. Now there are exceptions, a once a generation athlete like a prime Tyson might just be able to catch everyone early, but that's the EXCEPTION. NOT THE RULE.

If you ask me which is more effective in a street fight, NEITHER. Training in either will probably help with keeping your composure, and teach you some basic techniques you MIGHT use. But if you've ever seen a street fight, it doesn't resemble anything that happens in a boxing ring, or an octagon. In a street fight situation, ESCAPE first with you and yours. If escape is not possible, pick up a weapon, preferably one that will allow you to create DISTANCE. And all of that is only necessary if you have failed to AVOID the situation in the first place.

    Peace!

An amateur boxer who suffered many injuries and then went up against a bigger stronger pro doesn't prove much if anything.

The injuries weren't a factor at that point. The size/strength difference was negligible, and what it proves is that even if an MMA fighter is getting own3d in one aspect, he has a whole trick bag of some other sh!t to try. CC for your analysis though.

they are trained for stand up and ground techniques. A great boxer has them extremely overmatched in standup and the mma guy only has a marginal advantage when it goes to the ground. Now i know this might come off as me saying any good boxer can go into the octagon and wreck shop. Thats not what i'm saying. It would take a certain type of boxer (i'd have trouble finding you one today in any boxing weight class) to pull this off.

The advantage an MMA guy has on the ground is not "marginal". When I first started taking BJJ, I was getting owned by 160 pound Royce Gracie look-alikes.

And there's a few boxers I think could pull off some upsets in MMA. I think Miranda, Margarito, and a couple of others wouldn't look like fuktards in there.

And with his wrestling background, it wouldn't supprise me at all to see Cintron beat the hell out of sherk.

Like I said, there will never be a fair way to compare the two sports. They are so different I really don't even know whee to begin. Now you could get someone like Cintron in the octogon, but whether boxing likes it or not, the second he has to defend a takedown, he's a mixed martial artist.Actually hes an MMAist the second he even agrees to fight in mma simply because theres a possibility of a takedown, vice versa for boxing, someone like Sherk could only use his boxing if he stepped in a ring; he's boxer then. An unbelievably simple concept that unfortunatly still has to broken down for so many fanboys, and they still refuse to give into logic.

I'm going to lock this one up, not because it's got out of hand but because it hasn't.

If you don't like it go re-read Munkys original post till it sinks in.
