    Default Palabras encadenadas

    Killing Words.

A few friends were over last night and we were sippin' tea and talking of forgien language films. No tea, actually.

Anyway, we had to name out fav forien language film and I was given the restriction of "no kung fu cinema."

So I wowed them by throwing "killing words" out there. I even got them to watch it with me. If you have never seen this movie, go rent it. Well worth the funds.

    From the backcover:
"A distinguished professor and seemingly normal man, Ramon, keeps a tidy basement – carefully hidden from the outside world. In this basement, he’s given his "forced guest", Laura, the option of playing a word game with him. If she wins, he’ll set her free. If he wins, she loses big. She may be his prisoner, but she’s a formidable opponent…even with her hands tied."

    Thanks for the clips, friend.

I will be checking out those movies as soon as I can get my hands on them.

There is an entire library of awesome films that people never see because they ignore or never hear about the foreign cinema.

I have been watching this film a lot lately, called '9 Souls'.
Don't know what I can say... it is amazing, one of the best films I have ever seen. Funny, dramatic, crazy, emotional and the ending is awesome.

"Nine prisoners escape prison and go on a voyage to an elementary school at the foot of Mount Fuji, where cellmate number ten supposedly has hidden millions in counterfeit money. After much trouble they finally arrive, only to discover that there is no money. Disillusioned, the group now travels through Japan, where they one by one part with the group and in their own way confront their past.

Inspired by “The Great Escape”, even though any reference seems absent, Toyoda Toshiaki, has with “9 Souls” made not only his most accomplished film to date, but also one of the best Japanese films of recent years. A surreal fable on crime and punishment.

The story is divided into two parts: the first deals with their journey to the elementary school, the second with how the group splits up and each of them, in their own way, confronts their past.

In Japan, prisoners are taught to be part of a group, that the individual is nothing, and as such, the entire first part of the film can be seen as a comment on this idea. As long as they remain a group, they remain safe, as they all are driven by one goal, the millions of counterfeit money. That the treasure is an illusion, and that it’s beneath Mount Fuji, suggests, that the system also is an illusion. Realising this, one by one, the group splits up, each of the members confronting their past in each their own way...

At times, reminding one of the quirky humour of Kaurismäki and the desolation of Wenders, “9 Souls” is a masterpiece, utterly unique and inventive."

Here is one for the horror fans!
'Shutter' - Awesome Thai movie. One of my favourite horrors of the last couple of years.
(The trailer is in Thai, but it doesn't matter... the jist of it is, the main guy is getting stalked by the ghost of a girl from his past... but why? Watch the movie to find out... )

That movie has the most unpredictable ending ever!
