Thread: More Bizzarre Boxrec Rankings

I love Boxrec. It's brilliant. I really mean that.

I also know that their rankings are based on numerics and not just common sense although they are probably just as reliable as all the others.....

However, listen to this......

Jermain Taylor fights his whole career at Middleweight - beating the longest reigning Middle Champ in History and defending against three champs (although all from lighter weights). He also defeated many ex champs on the way to the title. He then loses a classic fight against a young, undefeated contender whom he was a whisker of stopping early in the fight.

Cory Spinks gets kayoed for the Welterweight title - by a man who then goes 2-3-0-1 (with both victories against men with a combined 17 losses). He wins the Light-Middle title and, after one defence against a fringe contender, loses a close shot against one Jermain Taylor.

So why the fuck is Spinks ranked Higher than Taylor in their Middleweight ranking? I cannot even see a mathematical excuses for this In fact, why is Spinks ranked higher than Artur Abraham when Abraham is an undefeated Champion with FIVE defences to his name!!!

I'm shocked, stunned and amazed.

Saying that, I do love Boxrec just not their rankings

Because Cory Spinks is the truth!

I'm a big Spinks fan, too. If I had to guess, I would say that Spinks gets extra points with boxrec for holding titles in multiple weight classes at one point or another.

Spinks was welterweight champion, then jr. middleweight champ, then he fought Jermain at middleweight and a lot of people had Spinks winning that fight. (I had Spinks by two rounds, so it wasn't a total robbery or anything)


I think that Ring Magazine still has him rated as the top Jr. Middleweight in the world, too.

He may be the truth but his record as a Middleweight reads 0-0-1. I'm full of admiration of the mans talents but how can he be ranked above Taylor when his last fight was a loss to Taylor

If Tyson had died aged 23 he would have been undefeated Heavyweight Champ with a 37-0 (34) record. I remember - very very well - how much sportswriters thought of him back then. They were seriously discussing TWO defences in one night.

At the same age that Chava died Wildredo Benitez was 44-1-1 with his only loss to Sugar Ray Leonard and he'd been champ for over SIX years beating many many great fighters along the way.

Both of the above examples are all time Hall of Famers but both would have been ranked MUCH higher if they had died aged 23.

I think They should stick to Statistics,Facts and that superb record Keeping in general.

I def. agree on Sanchez as a topic it's pretty much up in the air as to how you think his career might have gone after Nelson.
I think his toughest test and possibly his 1st loss would have came in the hands of Alexis Arguello.

I've always said, the best boxrec ranking ever was when they had Prince Hamed ranked only one spot behind Willie Pep on the all-time featherweight list. Nothing can top that.

They've fixed it though.
