“If he hit him hard or not, I have no Idea. It may not have been intentional, but it was a dirty blow. I had to take control from the beginning. I always tell trainee referee’s that you must take control of the fight early or you will loose control” CORTEZ

When asked why he didn’t take a point from Floyd Mayweather for Elbow’s?

“Mayweather wasn’t using the elbows to hit him or cause him harm, he was just defending himself” CORTEZ


I don’t know but to me, it looks like a double standard. Cortez, himself even stated that he didn’t allow Hatton to fight his fight. It also sounds to me as though he is not even sure that blow behind the head even landed. He also claims that Floyd was not using his elbow as a weapon? OMG! I should post that one where he drives it into Hatton's jaw. It was a very dirty nasty intentional elbow shot to Hatton's jaw. Who want's to see it?

See this is were I feel it's right to argue. I was kinda pissed with many of Floyd's fans who failed to acknowledge how bad Cortez's performance was. They were both very dirty, which wasn't the problem...but the fact he deducted a point from Hatton yet did nothing about Floyd was silly.

Did anyone see the point were Cortez threaten to take a point of both of them for one offense? I laughed my tits off at that. What would be the fucking point of deducting a point from both men for the same offense at the same time? It wouldn't affect the outcome.

Also, as I said to Trainer Monkey...which he didn't respond to when I asked him. If you're Jose Luis Castillo, aren't you pissed that he allowed Hatton to get away with things in that fight but penalise him in the Floyd fight?

Again...I'll make the point that thankfully, Floyd's class decided the outcome of the fight, and I'm not making an excuse for Hattons loss. He lost because Floyd was the better fighter.

I have seen several pictures from the fight that clearly show Mayweather ramming his elbow into Hattons face or neck. If I knew how to post the pics I would. But your right it would have not had any outcome on the end result.

Cortez got it all wrong and was huffing and puffing from the first round onwards. He lost control and made decisions that were lacking in sensibility.

He made a mess of his job this weekend and I never want to see him referee a big fight (or even a minor one for that matter) again!

I can't remember what round it was, I think it was the third where Hatton clinched so much it was like watching Akinwande against Lewis.

Agreed! but I think it's mainly because of his personality. Why the hell is everyone bitching about Joe Cortez?? 'Oh he didn't let Hatton fight his fight'..Cortez did the right thing by splitting them up when Hatton tried to tie Floyd up for too long. That's not boxing! One thing I agree on is that the point deduction was debatable..a warning would have been fair but I blame the hostile crowd for that..Remember at school if you did something bad and your friends would be laughing encouragement at you..Your teacher would punish you in front of them to make an example out of you so you didn't do it again and also to send a message to your friends.
Well Cortez was the school teacher, Hatton the naughty boy and the Footba..I mean boxing fans were Ricky's friends encouraging him by letting out roars of approval.
Cortez was under pressure and made an example out of Ricky..fair enough. Wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Yea we're not complaining here that Hatton "couldn't fight his fight". Floyd fouled and got away with it, Hatton didn't. How can people not see that as a point?

There is no argument that Floyd's class showed in the end, we're arguing that Cortez was poor and showed favourtism.

You carnt blame PBF he got away with it big time like Hatton said he would of done the same if he could get away with it.Cortez was shocking he split them up in the first 5 seconds of the fight and he must of seen those elbows and forearms.HBO had Hatton 1 point up going into the second half of the fight so if PBF got a point deducted like Hatton it would of been a close fight (the real judges tho would of shafted Hatton if he was winning come the end) But you have to say last few rounds Floyd was very very impressive he looked unbeatable.

if Hatton (or anyone) is fighting dirty they should be stopped, hence he wasn't allowed to fight his 'style'.
