Thread: Can these guys beat Floyd (in their prime)?

1) Mayweather vs. SRL...this would be a hard fight. I see Leonard winning this in 12 rounds, there's no way Floyd would make Leonard look silly. I might even say Leonard would KO him in the 10th or 11th round. I honestly believe SRL had the right style/skills to beat Floyd.

2) Mayweather vs. Alexis Arguello...this fight would be very similar to the DLH fight ( in the sense that Arguello would be attacking throughout the fight) BUT the big difference is that he would not tire in 8/9 rounds. Arguello would DESTROY Floyd! Sorry Floyd LOVERS, those of you who think Mayweather is superior to God, Alexis would punish him all night long.

What do you think? Agree or disagree with me? I would love to hear your thoughts...let's hear 'em...

Actually I'm not a huge fan of Arguello, though the guy was awesome back then. I believe Arguello would kick his ass! ...and i'm sticking to that. Trinidad would have left himself way too open for Floyd's quick right hand, I see him losing by UD. I do like your list though...we should also add Oscar De La Hoya & Marvin Hagler.

Whitaker & Floyd would put me to sleep though if they would fight( it's all about the styles )...zzz...They would make it a boring fight. It would be nearly impossible to determine who would win this one.

Having seen Judah, DLH and now Hatton all failing to beat Floyd using varying tactics i believe no one fighting today can beat him at 147lb. I lean towards a prime Tszyu due to his stalking style, using that left lead to measure his opponents and then unleashing a huge right hand, of course he would have to find Floyd but i just can't help thinking that over twelve rounds KT would have hit him at least once and no one in Floyd's career has really tested his chin. It's all hypothetical but the Tszyu of 1999-2002 would have caused huge problems for PBF. Floyd has incredible defensive skills and appears to work his opponents out very early on in his fights, maybe Hearns with his height and power might have done the job, i think we are seeing a true all time great in this era and we are finding it difficult to believe that Floyd could beat our favorite fighters of the past, he is already beating our favorite fighters of the present.

How would Arguello vs Mayweather be anything like Oscar vs Mayweather ?? first off Mayweather is about x2 times better at Superfeatherweight than he was at Lightmiddleweight. The fight would be little similar to Castillo fight, with Arguello picking his shots well and not wasting any punches, Arguello was very accurate puncher way more accurate than Castillo of course, but it was Castillo's head movement when he bobbed and weaved and come up with the punches that gave Mayweather trouble. Arguello stands straight up unlike Castillo i could see Superfeatherweight version of Mayweather beating Arguello. Mayweather was so fast at Superfeatherweight it was unbelievable, plus he had great punching power at that weight.

Oscar De La Hoya was throwing flurries and missed almost all of them. Mayweather out boxed Oscar De La Hoya. I think thats bad comparison to Mayweather vs Arguello.

Duran = Mayweather by decision.
Mosley (In his prime) = Mayweather by close decision.
Pryor = Umm unsure about this one.
Kosta = Mayweather by UD.
Whitaker = Draw.
Trinidad = Mayweather by UD.

Arguello would bet outpointed by a larger margin, as for Leonard, its a toss, up I think Mayweather's style causes more problems for Leonard than vice virsa, but Leonard is the natural WW.

I'd put my money on koysta and mosley to have beaten floyd in their prime.

I wouldn't say kill but I def. see Alexis beating PBF. I've posted why before.

I think Floyd is a very good fighter and he'd be difficult for many fighters but then again many fighters would be very difficult for him to handle.

Most Difficult to beat for Floyd

Ray Robinson - he's THE BEST, great footwork, great speed, excellent power, well rounded fighter he could move he could stalk he could fight going backwards.

Ray Leonard - He's extremely close to THE BEST, he could brawl he could stick and move and he had good power too. Ray had the attitude to really draw Floyd out and have a brawl and I think it would have been a toe to toe brawl between those two.

Tommy Hearns - he's rangy powerful and he controlled distance pretty well....I doubt Floyd would have stood up to the punishment he dished out to Ray Leonard

Roberto Duran - Duran had a horrible attitude and if there was one guy who could mentally take Floyd out of a fight it was this guy. Good chin tough as nails and he was an extremely talented BOXER he could bull into the inside and hit and not get hit he did a marvelous job vs Ray Leonard in Montreal.


I think a fight vs Pryor or Mosley would be too hard to call


Honorable mentions: Pernell Whittaker, Emile Griffith, Julio Cesar Chavez, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilain, Carmen Basilio

Against Robinson I think this fight could really go either way, but Robinson would be a heavy favorite. THe reason is that we don't know how Ray would have delt with speed that matched his own, and also the combinations he threw wouldn't be able to land on Floyd because of the angles he used, and just because combinations don't land on Floyd. One thing both Leonard and Robinson would have an advantage at is that as Mayweather has moved up he has used less and less footwork and I think they would capatilize on this because when he pot shots Mayweather is a lot easier to read what he is going to do offensively. However the reason I think Floyd has a shot of beating RObinson a few times at WW is because Robinson is so easy to hit(for a pure boxer) sometimes I would wonder how he is one of the greatest all time, until he would go on an offensive fury consisting of 10-15 brutally hard punches, but both of them threw wildly when they threw their combinations and I think once Mayweather got used to their speed, if he lasted that long, he would started getting countering them hard enough to earn their respect. Now people are going to say they both had indestructible chins, but Robinson's chin wasn't as good as it was at middleweight and psychologicall it helps when you can return the fire, but once he found that he couldn't hit Mayweather very easily to would interesting to see how Robinson would go on from there, either he would just go on an offensive rampage for the rest of the fight and win through pressure and the occasional hard punch landing or he would try to box on the outside with his height and might lose because Mayweather has the better defense.

Well like i said before SRL beat PBF i can not see it any other way. SRL was quicker on his feet them PBF not by much but it would trouble Floyde. Had speed they are about the same but SRL with a reach and advantage coudl use his jab ong PBf for the earlier rounds and trun it up it up in the later rounds of the fight. SRL had everything going for him at the weight and i can not see PBF winning if they fought 20 times i bet SRl everytime.

And you would lose at least ten times . SRL wasn't quicker on his feet than Mayweather, if you watch Baldomir Mayweather compared to Leonard-Hearns or Duran its even, and Mayweather is a little bit quicker(time wise) getting in with his punches. You keep on talking about this reach advantage, but Ray was 2 inches taller an he had a 2 inch reach advantage(THough Mayweather's arms are longer). At their speed this means almost nothing, maybe if Leonard was 6' and he had Hearn's reach it would be different, but thats not the case. Also I see Leonard landing a few jabs early on, but it wouldn't go on for long becuase Mayweather would either bring his left hand up which he has done against fast southpaws or he would slip it which he would most likely do and go to work on the inside, and thats where this fight would take place mostly IMO, I see Mayweather coming forward like he did against Judah, and Leonard trying to box from the outside, but Mayweather would slip his punches and get inside where his sharper technique would make this fight an ATG. Also this would be the first opponent Leonard faced who was as fast as him, but also in better shape than him. I think Hagler was also in better shape than him, but Hagler was a lot slower. I just think you are hyperbolizing Leonard's physical advantages. He obviously hits harder, a little stronger, but in terms of speed, reflexes at WW they are equal and Mayweather's better technically. I am not saying he is the greatest ever, but he is easily up there with any WW and this is 17 pounds above where he is the best ever.

JLC & Alexis are worlds apart in the technical aspect alone not considering footwork, accuracy (as you noted), speed & power.
For 1 Alexis is not one to swarm in the way JLC did.
One thing you make note of was Alexis standing up straight, that's right with both hands hel'd high. Very similar stands to Finitos, JMM & Rafa ("The Nacho Way" in other words). Alexis was able to pick up shots with his gloves this way and or just take a step to the side making his opponents miss.

I didn't mean exactly like Castillo vs Mayweather, i meant Arguello would use patient aggression against Mayweather like Castillo did.
