They still score them in the UK, but theres now three judges in titles fights.Originally Posted by El Gamo
As far as I know, only the refs in England (Britsh boxing) scores a fight. (Never made sense to me.) In the US and here in OZ, the judges score the fights and the ref can only advise the judges on point deductions such as for low blows, head butts and other related issues.
Do not know when this "custom" started or for how long it has been going on.

Thankyou for the responses. I know it doesn't happen anymore but when it did,was it just in the UK?Or everywhere? When I say used to,I mean long long ago,I'm talking black and white days![]()

Unless things have changed in the last few years, they still have ref's scoring fights in the UK. As for the "good old days of boxing" in the states, to the best of my memory, they have always used judges to score fights. (Could be wrong, as I am not 200 years old yet)Originally Posted by El Gamo
but for as long as I have been watching fights (early 60's) there has been judges at every fight doing the scoring.

Hvae a Cool Click on me for the info. I'm actually from England and didn't know refs still scored fights here myself!Originally Posted by Ghost
If you look on Tony Oakey's score card below the Brian Magee fight you will see that the Ref has been the one to score alot of the fights, Sometimes with one other judge.

I don't like it's very one sided. The ref can only see one side of the fight.
I remeber a few Ali fights. The ref was filling in a score card. It just depends, say a judge can't make it to the fight. Just give the ref a score card problem solved.
If you scroll down a bit on Tony Oakey's scaore card you can see he tested positive for cocain. LMAO.
What are British boxers like.
For title fights they don't, but for non-title fights, they still do I believe. (Not 100% sure tho) Have not seen a fight from the UK in awhile, so things might have changed.Originally Posted by El Gamo

I didn't know either until I saw Nigel Wright vs Lenny Daws for the British title at light welter and as soon as the final bell rang the commentator started shouting '...and its a DRAW!!'. I thought 'how the fuck does he know so soon??' lol..but he'd obviously looked at the refs hand signalOriginally Posted by El Gamo
