Default Floyd Mayweather is one smart guy.

I was thinking of RJJ and I remember when he used to say that he was going to be his own promoter,he had his music thing and just wanted to be his own man but since his losses and plus the fact that he never became a huge PPV star, means that now he is working with guys like DOn King.In fact,I would say he has to.

Floyd actually succeeded where RJJ kind of failed. Mayweather has his own promotional label but more importantly,he is a big PPV star without overly relying on any promoter. He is his own man. I may not agree with some of his opponent choices and I still think the people that buy his 2nd fight with Oscar are either rich or foolish, but he is 1 smart guy. He doesn't need to rely on anyone else.

didnt his promotional company work with goldenboy promotion, and his next fight is with goldenboy?
and his record company sucks, its been up for a couple of years alrdy, and no significant song or album is even out, hes probably going to have to rely on 50-cent for popularity since they good friends

Floyd is a big ppv draw because his opponents are big ppv draws. He is a smart fighter but hes not as big as Roy was in the 90s. Unlike Oscar and Roy, Floyds best years as a fighter were not highly publicized.

How was Ricky Hatton a big PPV draw in the United States? Most people in the US had never heard of Ricky Hatton until Floyd knocked him out.

Oscar was/is a much bigger star than Floyd. No doubt about that.

Roy was never bigger than Floyd is right now. Roy went almost 10 years in his prime without a big PPV event. Between the Toney fight in '94 and the Ruiz fight in '03, Roy was either on regular HBO, or fighting on minor PPVs that most people didn't order.

    SweetPea is right on.

Roy wasted his prime on cops and cab drivers. He should have been making mega fights with Benn/Dariusz/Calzaghe/Hopkins 2.

The sad thing is that at his best I think he wins every one of those fights.

Now he's calling out the best and, at 40, he's gonna get beat down. Prince Badi, Hanshaw and a blown up Tito are light years removed from Hopkins and Calzaghe right now.

roy was never big ppv at all. in fact i never knew he fought on ppv until yesterday. and to add to that, i am a big boxing fan, i paid 55 bucks to watch mayweather fight baldomir yet i didnt even order the jones trinidad fight although both of them are hall of famers. both guys were never a ppv draw to begin with.

ricky hatton had some build up after the castillo ko and calling out floyd publicly, not to mention ricky was undefeated...i think you're slacking ricky a bit on what he brought as far as attraction, besides floyd would have never faced him if he didn't think he was a huge draw..

other than delahoya or a fight with cotto in madison square garden the hatton fight was the biggest money maker for floyd and did i forget to mention the brits that flew over to support ricky....

As far as making ppv money on a few fights youre right Floyd did much better, But Roy is/was a household name mostly because he fought on HBO non ppv. Floyds best years at Super featherweight and Lightweight went under the radar for many. When he moved up to Light Welterweight then he started to get more recognition. Also, Roy was and is more charismatic and had a bigger entertainment value, not that PBF isnt at all entertaining.

floyd's charisma seems forced...i can only imagine how big jones-ruiz would have been if they had jones-ruiz 24/7...
