Heavyweight prospect Jason Estrada fights in a few hours time. Does anyone think he will be a decent heavyweight contender or just another prospect that fails to make waves.

If he has a pulse he'll beat Charles Shufford. I can tell you that much.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

Well he cant be that bad if he was a former Olympian, but he looked real slow for being a smaller heavyweight.
I think Estrada is actually an excellent prospect. He has very good skills and knows the game well. Solid amateur base. He is also much stronger than his knockout record suggests. Over time I think you will see him get more KO's. You have to consider that Estrada started fighting 'good' competition - survivor types very early on in his professional carrer - Robert Wiggins, Robert Hawkins, Demetrice King, Zack Page, and now Shufford...who I see Estrada won against, and by easy decision, tonight. These guys Estrada is beating are journeymen no question, but they are tough guys with some wins and legitimate boxing experience. Hawkins gave Tua a good fight, beat Terry Smith, just upset Dominick Guinn, and from what I understand was giving the big heavyweight Virchis a good tussle before he got cold cocked. Estrada dusted Hawkins up - shut him out just last year. The way Estrada is beating these guys...winning nearly every round, is a good testament to his skill level. All of these guys are fighters that almost never get knocked out.
Most prospects fight stiff after stiff, rookies and novices. Estrada has taken a more difficult though constructive road early, and I think this will benefit him later on... Now, the loss to fellow prospect Travis Walker surprised me. Walker had been fighting stiffs, and I thought Estrada would outclass him. Estrada came in heavy, perhaps a little overconfident from beating Walker more than once in the amateurs. In that fight he got just a little bit outworked by a more determined guy...and I think it will be one of those cases when a loss does a young guy some good. Estrada has absolutely been more focused and better conditioned since the Walker loss. I am sure he would like to have that one back... Which is exactly what I think he should do. Get himself a rematch with Walker. A focused Estrada, in a ten round fight, beats Walker seven rounds to three next time.
Estrada's tenacity has been questioned, but I think he's got it right now. I think he understands that opportunities don't last forever.
The knockouts will come...perhaps they should put him in there with a couple Glass Joe's - like they do with all the other prospects, to pad that record while they wait for Walker or better competition.
I have been following Estrada's career, and consider him widely underrated...which is why I had so much to say here.
i been watchin him alot lately and what goyo says above is pretty much on point. Im extremely happy to see they are not rushing him. He is taking his time, getting his rounds in, and sharping his skills. Real nice to see him come up the way he did.
He's looked good but honestly like another Heavy prospect in Eddie Chambers neither guys for me does it....
I just can't see them mixing it up with some of the current champs maybe years down the road when Wlads gone and the creme of the crop is Peter, Thompson, Povetkin and Chazz?
Keep an eye out for Nigerian/German base Oloukun who started making noise in Germany already.
