    Default The Monster Puncher revealed

So I've asked numerous questions in relation to this topic in the last couple of weeks and here all is revealed. I've got a spar arranged with a world kick boxing champion. Not undeer age or with any limits, he's a world champ, best at the weight. He's a pretty huge puncher and enjoys a height advantage.

But my question is, how do I approach this spar? Do I wade in looking for blood or would that be disrespectful?

what are the dynamics? can he kick, or just boxing? if he can kick, get inside in a hurry. leg kicks are devastating. beyond that, i'd feel him out, but take nothing for granted. and protect yourself at all times! it's always hard to say what you should do when sparring a guy for the first time. generally, i wait and work off him.

I'd try being polite so he would take it easy on me.

lol, yeah i guess its better to show some mutual respect before the spar. But i have a feeling that since hes a World Champ (WORLD champ? godamn) that hes going to have a bit of pride and fight in him, people with credentials like that usually have an reputation and image to protect, so i dont think hes going to go light and fuzzy. Specially since you never met the guy before, im sure he wont hesitate to dish out an ass beating to a stranger. I might be wrong though.

Anyhow, try to pop off a couple jabs and dance around him, keep your guard up and be ready to react quick though. If he reacts spazzy like he wants to throw some leather, then you know what to do. You transform like a transformer and work his kick fightin ass.

If you need a fight plan well i thought one up, I dont know how he fights but you've mentioned HIS height advantage (which is what you're going to turn into YOUR advantage). And i've read that you're heavy handed and more of a pressure fighter if im correct? My advisment, Go to work solely on his body right off the bat, Constantly attacking it. Pop a jab, go to the body. Try to land a couple clean ones to the kidney, liver, solar plexus, the soft spots. Once you've got your body work established, and got it into his head that you're willing and ABLE to rip his body up. Then the field is set for you man.

Once you notice that he starts to bring his guard down a lil lower and hes wary of the body punches, then thats the time to feint low and KO him up top in a dramatic fashion with a leaping left hook..okay, so it might not turn out so dramatic, but you catch my point right.. You gotta make those shots to the head really count and throw them without hesitation RIGHT after you feint to his body with the timing of a one-two combo. Not.. one.. two.. more like onetwo. body!head!. And because you've got heavy hands and you know hes not expecting it and that adds to the shock factor tenfold. And if it all goes according to plan, you're really gonna rock him with that body feint + left hook/straight right to the head and i'd say you have a good chance of pummeling this guy on the ropes while hes covered up trying to recover from that unexpected head shot.

Update on how the spar goes, and if you happen to employ the gameplan above, lemme me know if it was effective or not. But however it goes, hope you show em what a Boxers hands are capable of, put the fear into him for all of us pugilists here at Saddo man

    edit: WAR IRISHMAN!

Nah I wouldn't even spar him if he was kicking, That would be a grave mistake on my belhalf.
When sparring anyone I usually have a warm up process. In that process if we mutually agree to make it tough I'll do that. He's using me to sharpen his already classy hand skills.

Hey man thanks for the enthusiasm.
I know the guy pretty well. For the past ten years I've been in awe of him, pointing and saying "he's a world champ!" Now I get to spar him?! Crazy!
He's won a few pro boxing fights too. He's a class act and an inspiration to many so I just want to learn.
Can't wait for it, if it does get hard what can I say? Thats how I'll learn!

    Some thoughts.

well, have you agreed a hard or light spar? Have you discussed what he is wanting to work on? Is it defence/offence? Combo's what??

If he's a decent sort and not acting like a jerk this would/could/should be arranged before hand. If he's looking for someone to beat up on I wouldn't volunteer to be someones ego boost.

We're all been in with people better and worse than ourselves, and some go out to prove a point (I've either toughed it out, changed tactics or if they're an idiot backpeddeld and asked a question while sparring so they remember they're sparring!! never asked them to back off though, kept it technical)

Has it happened already yet? The only thing that comes to mind which may or may not mean something to you is what my trainer reminds me of sometimes especially when I am or just have competed or sparred against someone bigger.

I find it helps if I can do it and it's simple enough.

    Back yourself.

That's it. Trust in the skills you have, the balance etc and you'll probably find with your strong boxing background that you have more you can call on to hold your own than you realise.

Letting your awe of him diminish what you're confident in would be a mistake. Maybe that's not something you are prone to but I sometimes assume things that would work won't without trying them against certain people.

If he wants to beat me up let him. This is a learning process for me and as we are of similar weight, height and build I'll be gunning back too.
I'm looking forward to it now and hope it becomes a regular fixture.

He's a decent guy, but he wouldn't waste his time if he wasn't going to benefit.

I'm not really in awe of anyone, I just see them as an opportunity for me to learn. It feels great being considered to spar with this guy, I'm going in to make myself feel even better!!!

    Feel him out first
Stay the f away from him,and try to get a feel for how fast he is,and how hard he's hitting
Do you have tape on this guy?
Because if you dont, just waiding in is like putting a giant kick me sign on yourself
Try to point it out at first
If he's that much faster then you, swarm hold, and hit
Do NOT let yourself be there for either the uppercut or the cross, take jabs and hooks if you have to,but if this guy is as good as you say,he's going to remove your head from your shoulders if you give him either of those shots.
It may not be enough, but these are your best usable tactics I can give without getting a look at him

I'd have a word with the guy before you start. If he's an okay sort of bloke he'll be looking to get something out of the session too and won't get that if he looks to take advantage. Let him know that you appreciate the opportunity to get in there and would like to mix it up a bit that way when you let your hands go he'll know you're not trying to get some cheap shots in.

Great opportunity to judge yourself against a guy with this type of experience so most of all enjoy it fella !!!

Hopefully you will benefit as well. (perhaps more than him). Don't forget that old saying "spar with bums and you eventually become one", but "spar with tough, seasoned guys, you eventually become one of them".

Delighted, thrilled, excited and definitely sore.

Hits like a horse, but he said I had equal power! Not sure about that but I left hooked him twice and he did not like it....
