Just read on Eastside boxing that Joes Cortez is gunna be the referee for the Calzaghe vs Hopkins fight. Lets hope he does a better job than he did in the Hatton vs Mayweather fight!

Nothings Sweeter Than Sugar
Let's hope. hopefully he redeems himself from his last display!!
ye heres hoping any news on the undercard a dis fight yet guys?
I used to be a big fan of "Firm but Fair" but after the bullshit in the Mayweather/Hatton bout IMO he is useless as Jay Nady....Nady is in the dressing room before the PBF/DLH bout (I think it was that fight if, I could be wrong but it was one of Floyds fights)..saying "It is an honor to be a ref in your bout, I love yopu, this is a dream come true, can I massage your testicales after the bout"....Freaking Scrub!!!
Cortez is posing with Floyd taking pictures after the Hatton bout...Freaking Scrub!!!!.....
Richard Steele stops bouts if the corner man rub's vaseline on to hard
Thanks goodness for Steve Smoger...I miss Mills Lane![]()

If he refs this like he did PBF-Hatton thats advantage Calzaghe,Cause Hopkins will try and tie Calzaghe up on inside i just hope he see's the head buts that B Hop sometimes uses as his 3rd fist.
This fight will reveal if Cortez actually discriminated against Hatton.
In a strange way Hopkins and Hatton employ similar tactics in that they tie up on the inside a lot.
If Cortez allows Hopkins away with it, we'll see he waas unfair to Hatton.

That was before the Baldomir fight that Nady went on about Mayweather. I have to say that it was pretty awkward, even Floyd seemed a bit uncomfortable. Nady was like a dog humping Mayweather's leg. That must have been awkward for everyone knowing the camera was in the room. What a joke that was.
Mills was a great referee. So is Steve Smoger, some of my other favorites are Bayless, Cappacino (spelling is probably off) and Tony Weeks. I also like Cortez.
I've seen the PBF - Hatton fight probably about 4 or 5 times but never really paid attention to the referee's job and I never really heard what the exact criticism of Cortez was.
So forgive me for being slow but what exactly was it that he did that was so wrong? I haven't really heard the exact criticisms.
I totally disagree with this desicion. It wasn't just the Mayweather Hatton fight but just about every world title fight in about the past 3 years. The man is too old, he misses too much dirty fighting on the inside and off the breaks.Cortez is just awful he needs to leave this sport with whatever dignity he has left. What this fight needs is an in-shape ref.Someone who will be physical when B-Hop clinches.Someone lie a Michael Ortega I believe is his name.Someone physical. Not no f**king Joe Cortez
Calzaghe and his camp are happy with the Cortez choice. So Calzaghe better not run his mouth about the ref after Hopkins beats his ass
You guys aren't giving Calzaghe enough credit, he can be just as dirty as Hopkins, he also ties up on the inside on the ref's side while hitting with his other hand on the other side. Cortez is a good ref, I think he did a poor job in the Mayweather-Hatton fight, but Hatton's inside fighting style is illegal, not the fact that he hugs, but that he will take your glove away from your face and punch you, he shouldn't be allowed to fight illegally on the inside and Cortez said that leading up to the fight, but also Mayweather shouldn't be allowed to push off with his forearm, As for the elbows, Mayweather was using them defensively, but Hatton was trying to smothering him so much it was Hatton's own fault he ran into them, but Mayweather mostly pushed off with his forearm not his elbows, though it is still illegal.
Cortez refereed the Hatton v Castillo fight and he did not break the fight that much, as soon as Hatton fought Mayweather he was breaking it up immediately every single time they clinched. Amazing the same referee could be so easily influenced.![]()
