Default Merchant throwing Belts in the Trash

This was in Dan Rafael's chat Friday:

"Steve, Sac, Ca: Dano, I was watching an old HBO review following the first Lewis/Holyfield fight where Lampley and Merchant threw the WBC,WBA,IBF titles in the trash following that horribe decision. I thought it was funny, did you happen to ever watch it?

Dan Rafael: Of course. It was a beautiful moment."

    Did that really happen?

    Is this video online?

That link's been removed, but one other thing that I remember that was funny from that HBO show...

They interviewed the judge who scored it 115-113 for Holyfield, and they asked her specifically about one round that Lewis dominated, but she had scored 10-9 for Holyfield.

Her excuse was that all the action in that round had happened on the opposite side of the ring from where she was seated, so she was blocked from seeing a lot of the punches. Merchant and Lampley watched the tape of that round, and the tape showed that she was totally full of shit, the vast majority of the round had been fought on her side of the ring, right in front of her.

haha great video I'm shocked that HBO would have had the balls to publicly mention the possibility of match fixing and then to throw the belts into the bin

I can see now also why they keep Harols Leaderman off camera, he twitches and jerks more than Michael J Fox.

The biggest farce of all is the fact that they even have women judges.

Fucking crazy it's been scientifically proven that women cannot follow sport so why in the world would you have them judging one of the biggest fights of all time?

    Damn Bilbo.....getting any lately?

Seriously though, the fact that she could give the 5th to Holyfield was a true Hellen Keller moment.I think he actually lifted Him off the canvas with a brutal body shot, had him folded up for a minute.

Look at that fro on Lamp's.....wooo

Good find on the vid. I remember the day of that fight so well. Watched it at a pub but had to be somewhere else soon after. So before the decision was announced I ran home to do whatever it was i needed to do thinking Lewis had won easily. Then I saw the news that night and i was in shock, it was a heart sinking moment.

That decision wasnt nearly as bad as some of the recent HBO bouts and Merchant and Lampley havent been outraged by them. Where was the Casamayor-Santa Cruz outrage from those guys. I like what Letterman had to say though. He is probably the least byass of them.

I had never seen this video. I have to grab the part of them tossing the belts in the trash. I guess the word trinket was not used back then.

When did the word trinket become a boxing term for belts?

Casamayor-Santa Cruz wasn't for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. It was an interim title bout stashed on an undercard.
