Default How do you guys take care of your joints?

Any supplements or exercises you guys recommend? Lately my elbows have been bugging out on me. Sometimes i feel a dull pain when i shadowbox and my arms are extended all the way. My knees aint doing to swell either. Suggestions would be pretty helpful, i dont want to have the joints of a 80 year old when im only like 25.

From what I understand, fish oil is the way to go for joint pain. I too tend to experience this and am looking more into it.

Hopefully one of the more experienced old farts in here can come along and elaborate and help us both out.

Any way... diet is key... fatty acids etc.

But I think I know the root of your proplem... they hurt when you fully extend whilst shadow boxing?

Don't fully extend your arms when you do shadow, you run the risk of hyper extending them because of the momentum. keep a soft lock.

Someone once before told me not to lock out while shadowboxing and i still always keep doing it. I always lock my jab out and i was thinking that was one of the reasons i was fucking up my elbows.

BTW you guys and you're pot entendres. LOL. buncha stoners you are..

Yeah I was going to recommend fish oil. You could also look into FlaxSeed oil as well... Both are cheaper that glucosamine... Fish oil you can probably get a big tub of tablets for pretty cheap...

Glucosamine is getting cheaper... It was like "the in thing" for a while there when they first started advertising it was good for joints, and it was quite expensive compared to fish oils. But the price has come down now..

You gotta be very careful with your joints! I have one, and sometimes two, very bad wrists that play up all the time... I can't even shuffle paper around at work for a few hours without them getting sore...

Maybe go to a physio and see if they can give you advice...

If you have the money, then glucosamine is worth it. Your body uses it everything to your joints, tendons, including your body's natural wd-40 to keep everything running smoothly. Better yet take it with MSM with works in conjuction with glucosamine.

Over here the stuff costs as much as plutonium. If you find a health store/website that is having a sale, then stock up. Your joints will thank you later.

I'd also recommend getting some kind of Omega 3 or even better EFA (essential fatty acids) such as from the sources that have been mentioned. Right now I'm taking the capsule form that contains Fish/Flax/Borage-oils.

On another note, take extra precautions when exercising. Invest hours of your time learning proper running technique, and not wearing the common heavily padded, wedge-shaped shoe design which contrary to popular belief hinders your biomechanics which also puts more stress on your joints.

If you decide to lift weights or partake in any form of resistance training, then avoid exercises that puts unnecessary stress on your joints, learn proper technique, and make sure your body is warmed up and ready to work hard. Also take up a good stretching regimen (Scrap has some good stretches). Remember, common sense first, and supplements come second.
If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

    G/C helps repair joint damage.

EFA's mediate infalmmatory responses via biosynthetic pathways.

If you decided on an oil with EFA's, go with a cold pressed flax seed oil that is in the bottle, NOT the capsules, and has been stored in a fridge.

Mix it with cottage cheese oy plain yogurt as it becomes emulsified and easier to absorb and metabolize.

I do wonder if maybe the reason I am experiencing joint pain is due in course to my age and growth. I've literally grown 1 full foot in the last 2 years. Most of this pain I get is in my knees. Anyway, am meeting with my doctor first thing next month, and plan to discuss it with him and possible remedies. Will check back in this thread after that and post what I find from it.

Yes, one punch the wrong way by locking them out fully extended can hurt the cartilage in the elbow so that you're unable to punch for a week+.

Light stretching before any work-out is key.Weather its joint pain in your fingers, elbows, knee's,ankle, any where on your body.A good old streching session on your full body from head to toe for 15-20 minutes before you shadow box will work wonders,as it will slowly warm up and slacken up your tendons around your joints.I suffer from a dull pain sensation in me left ankle that makes a loud CRACKING sound every now and again when i put pressure on it.The dull pain you mentioned will be the tendon stretching over your joint.Your joint will be really tight thats why your getting the dull sensation. You need to gently stretch it so that your tendon over that particular joint(elbow, fingers, ankle, etc)becomes slack and extended.

Really good advice there from other good minded folks about taking GLOCOSAMINE SULPHATE and well as good old FISH OIL(cod liver,Salmon). Here is another tip...try a hand full of mixed "NUTS"a day.Theres really good fat in NUTS that will help your joints too.And try JELLY too.Yum YumFacts!!!

Before every fight, spar or training session I do a whole body joint treatment.
I move each joint slowly and loosely on it's hinge, ball or floating action and prime the synovial fluid.

Andre has a great nack of describing how the above is done best.

If I've got any problematic joint or muscle areas I use Tiger balm to address the problem.

Fish oils are a supplement I take daily, to aid synovial fluid.

In the instance of prolonged injury due to joint injury, Swimming is a great exercise thats not too demanding on any joints.
