Thread: drunk driver, many cyclists, big crash

THIS horrifying picture shows the moment a US man apparently drunk and asleep ploughed into cyclists on a bike race - killing one and injuring at least 10 others.
Driver Juan Campos, 28, was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, along the highway near the US-Mexico border.
Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34km race yesterday between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.
Campos, who police claimed was drunk and asleep during the incident, said he was an American citizen living in Brownsville. The US Consulate could not immediately confirm that.
"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved," consulate spokesman Todd Huizinga said.

Other cyclists involved in the accident are calling for the death pentaly for the driver.

That is seriously painful to look at, terrible waste of life because some jackass DUI.

It's a horrible accident.. Cyclists are so vaulnerable, as they really have no protection aside from their helmets. And a lot of times, they are riding on roads along side cars doing over 60mph, with only a yard or so seperating them.... It's not surprising that so many cyclists are killed and injured every year... It's a wayyyy more dangerous sport to take up than boxing...

But in this case, it's just a pure waste that some guy was so selfish to drink, and then drive in that state where he fell asleep at the wheel...

I train a couple of cycleist and that terrifies me the cunt wants shooting and Id pull the trigger, cunt.

Horrible!! Not to sound callous and jokey, but the 1st thing that comes to mind is it looks like a perfect strike on the bowling alley Hope they fry that prick. Never understood why people drink to the point of unconsciousness and decide to go for a drive

I'm not sure if anyone from overseas heard this story, but last year at about 1am in this small country town in Australia, a big bunch of teenagers/kids were walking down this country road heading home from a party, and a guy came flying around the corner and smashed into the group of them.. I think he injured 4 or 5, and killed 7... The guy ran off from the scene, and actually left his 2 young sons in the car... Just jumped out and ran... Maybe so they couldn't do a blood test and check for booze...

It was in the news for weeks and weeks,,, and in the newspaper they had photo's of all the kids he killed... There were these really gorgeous young girls and harmless happy looking boys.. There was 2 who were brother and sister, 17 & 14.. Just great happy looking kids. It was only a small town as well so it really shattered everyone who lived there....

On the news they had bits of footage from the funerals and they played that "Forever Young" song which was redone by "Youth Group" for "The O.C." tv show..

It actually made me tear up for a second hearing that song and imagining how emotional the childrens funerals would have been, and what a waste of life...

Needless to say, the guy was a very very very hated man...

Yeah, that driver should've went bowling that day instead of driving.

My mom (who is a secretary at the district attornys office so she'd know something about this) says that if you drink and drive and get someone killed, you can sometimes get a WORSE sentence than if you would if you actually shot somebody with a gun!

Which means this guy will probably go away for a loooooooooooooong time, if he doesn't get the death penalty. Good riddence. One less dumb driver off the road.

That ALSO brings up another story that was in the news here about a guy hitting a person in his car...
The sentencing was absolutely ridiculous..

The guy got manslaughter, but here's what happend.. To guys were walking home from the pub totally totally smashed.. They were both wearing dark clothes. One was so smashed that he laid down just off the side of the road (in dark clothes)... His friend who was a little more hypo, was yelling at cars as they went by, and decided to jump out in front of one and yell... The driver didn't see the guy on the road yelling until the last second, realised, swerved to miss the drunk idiot in the middle of the road, and ran over his sleeping friend and killed him.. And got charged with manslaughter..

That is horrible.. Apart from having the burden of killing someone hanging over you your whole life, there was absolutely nothing he could have done more in that situation, and the drunk idiots practically got themselves killed. You would feel so angry at them for being so stupid to put themselves in that situation and making YOU end up running one of them over...


Like when i'm driving along and a kid will run across the road, but then their friends will and consider it, and then run across at the last second...
I scream and honk at them and everything. Mainly because i'm so mad that they could get themselves killed, and some poor person would have to live with that...

You have no excuse for drink driving though in the state that driver was obviously in to hit all those cars with a police escort in the middle of the road with them....

In the drunks case it would've served them right. All we can do is pray for the man who got charged with manslaughter.

That's fukked up.

It's very hard just from that photo alone, to tell how it all ended up coming to that exact moment with 6 or 7 bikes flying over a cars hood... So you kind of bring up a point that may need some more investigation.. There are probably more articles that tell more of the story, but I didn't search to hard..
