Thread: Alright... In regards to the Tsurkan Angulo bout. This didn't piss anyone else off?

Anybody else get angry with the fact that Lampley was screaming(not once... not twice... not three times but four) "Go Down! Go Down! Go Down! Go Down!" to Tsurkan in closing moments of the fight and the fact that the HBO commentators kept bringing up Ring Death during this bout... I mean Tsurkan was taking a beating and yeah the ref had many chances to stop the bout but Lampley REALLY PISSED ME OFF... Commentate the fight and leave your shit at the door. I got so angry with the HBO team during this bout!

The whole ring death thing annoyed me too. He was taking a beating, but he was returning punches. Angulo threw maybe one punch that wobbled Tsurkan. I said it before the fight, Tsurkan gets a lot of credit for coming to the lion's den and fighting Angulo. Dude is a warrior.

The fact that Lampley thought it was cool to scream(not only to the fighter but to the HBO viewing audience) "Go Down!" to a fighter 4 times infuriated me...

Shut the F**K up and comment on the fight... That's your job. The ref, corner and commission worry about the fighter. You're paid to anylize the fight.

He is the most biased announcer I've seen, and he only see's punches he wants or mentions punches he wants. The guy is horrible.

Horrible or no, the only thing I objected to was the shrillness of his voice. Imagine if you've seen guys die from taking a beating and Angulo-Tsurkan is very reminiscent of those fights. I would suggest he's only acted his conscience.

If you'd been a patron when your bank was robbed on 3 occasions wouldn't you do something if you saw a guy pulling a ski mask over his face walking through the outer door? I mean, he might not be getting ready to rob the place...

I thought Lampley was especially over the top. It was grating on me, the fight was completely one sided, but the whole death thing was unneccessary. What did he say at one stage? "Give him a birthday present and stop the fight!!". Oh shut up, Lampley! Seriously.

I'm going to have to disagree with pretty much everyone here.

I just watched the fight, and that kind of beating can have a very long lasting impact on a person. Tsurkan was taking flush power shots all night. It was clear relatively early on that he had NO chance to win. None, he landed his best shots and Angulo didn't even blink. The ref, ringside doctor, or the corner should have stopped the fight long before it inspired memories of fighters dying in the ring. It wasn't just Lampley either, every member of the HBO team was adamant that the fight should be stopped. Lampley has seen people die in the ring, and for what, pride (no pun intended)? Pride doesn't mean sweet fuck all when you're laying on a steel table in a morgue. Tsurkan took 400 punches, 296 of which were power shots and I didn't see too many glancing blows.

Not that it should matter, it sometimes does unfortunately, but it's not as if Tsurkan was an undefeated fighter or even one that had never been knocked out, speaking from a purely financial standpoint, a stoppage loss wasn't going to really hurt his career.

Hell, I wouldn't have been overly pissed off if Lampley had climbed in the ring to get the fight stopped.

Good post, nice points. I think there's a lot to be said for the fact that Lampley has seen fighters die in the ring before. This was as brutal a prolonged beating as you really ever need to see before a fight is stopped, he was maybe even thinking along the lines of some pre-emptive damage control. How does it look to the casual fan if a fighter does get seriously hurt in the ring and noone was bringing light to the possibility of this while he was being brutally beaten?

Thats just the problem Tsurkan's corner did NOT take care of their fighter. They kept pushing him back in knowing he had no chance of winning. If that had been one of our fighters he wouldnt have come out for round 7.
As for the referee all he was was a voyeur dancing round the ring like a ghost. He did nothing to officiate he was a disgrace also.
I dont particularly like Lampley. For me he's too much of a cheerleader for the HBO fighters but in this case he showed genuine concern for a fighter when no one else seemed to care. Thank God Tsurkan seems to be OK

Lampley and HBO were just being spoiled brats, and were bored of watching the fight, and so they wanted it stopped. Just like the first one.

They are fighters, WARRIORS, they fight. Thats what they do. If pussies like Lampley were around back in Jake Lamotta's day, he never woulda won a fight. Or least not a significant one.
