Routing through my vast vid collection and stumbled across Jason matthews hammering Ryan Rhodes for the vacant WBO title. Just wondering does anyone know what happened to him and where he is now? Cheers

I duno if he had an injury but we never saw him after he lost eth WBO belt to Kranjc
I remember Matthews cuz he was a quite a character and have a load of his early fights on video. He use to cover his face on the way to the ring for the 36 chambers. He also came out to Rayman music once ( a playstation game ) I jave the following fights
He fought Paul "do it" wright who came out to wham and knocked him out with a shot to the side of the head
Patrick swan was a Yank who looked like Henry from Neighbours . They gave him Brendan ingle in his corner that night . He said he had cramp and ingle pulled him out between rounds .
He fought Darren Dorrington the young bristol hopeful on the nas undercard and bashed him up too
Then the wheels came off vs loren zsabo, the hungarian countryman andres galfi did a similar shock job in glen catley. matthews had zsabo down early but as the rounds went on zsabo was still hanging in there and caught matthews with a left hook , the follow up flurries didnt really land and it appeared jason had overcome the worst of it but dave paris jumped in . premature stoppage. Rhodes went on to stop Szabo after that and Mathews never got his shot at redemption .
Matthews though got ryan in the ring and came out to hate me now by nas . He caught ryan at the end of the 1st round and had him hurt . in the 2nd instead of surviving ryan stood his ground and a right hand dropped him heavily. he couldnt beat the count and Matthews was in tears in the interview after .
Ill never know why Jason travelled abroad for his 1st defence . not good advice from mr warren . Jason got picked apart and stopped and we never heard from him again but he was a good exciting , vunerable fighter whilst he was around.
I heard, He was in somewhere He couldnt get out of, if my memory serves me right. But a good Fighter and nice Guy

First off Jason Matthews is my Dad
what happened to him, the reason that the Armand Krajnc fight (the defence of the WBO title) was stopped was that my dads eye had swolen and closed up. as a result of a thumb in the eye my dad was partial blind in his right eye for a while. and after god knows how many surgeries the surgeon's basically fucked his eye up even more. therefore was unable to compete in the ring anymore.

this is also true, but not gonna discuss that over here and that was back in 2000 for 6 months
Oh also the fight with Ryan Rhodes, my dad had 5 days to prepare for the fight and had only buried my grandmother, so that fight was always gonna be a win for my dad, to much pain, hence why he cries in the interview after the fight
proud day for my dad, i was only 9
p.s. GAME Frank Warren is a slimly B*****D, after my dad won the WBO Intercontinental Belt Warren just wanted money, nothing else!
Although my dad did let the belt get to his head the ref should have never stopped the fight. the Defence of the WBO as i explained before, my dad never got picked apart, he got an illegal thumb in the eye, i've seen the fight 1000000 times i know when it happens and it happens more than twice
anyway im rambling on
Nice one Perez Hope things are Good.

One of the best days seeing Mathews spark Rhodes. Awesome performance, wanted Jason to do well. Mathews was built like Bruno and had heavy hands but could box as well. Should have gone a lot further. Still brought some great memories.

Well i guess he retired as there is only so many times you can glue glass back together.
i never saw the rhodes fight
anyone know where i can watch it?

Jason matthews is working as a street warden in l keeping the streets safe, a man has to make a liveing to feed his family hats of to the man boxing is a hard game and you can only do as much as you can then you have to think about how to pay the bills [ keeping london safe]
Hey Perez,
It is obvious that you are proud of your old man. Has he has achieved what a lot of us people can only dream of. Boxing is a hard game and only the select few manage to reach the top.
I went to the same school as your old man and also remember seeing him in his first and second pro fights at the Albert Hall and then the London Arena.
It's a shame that his career ended so soon and the way it did as I believe that he could have gone on to bigger and better things but always remember that everything happens for a reason and what happened was meant to happen.
His success in the ring has obviously been surpassed by his success outside the ring as he has brought up some well adjusted children and for that he should be even more proud than the title of the champion of the world.
All the best my friend
Well said and great post.

I'd love to know how many people in this thread are posting from the same IP address. Call me synical but I've never seen so many new posters turn up in a thread to contribute to a discussion that is fairly niche in boxing terms.
