    Default The problem with Kessler

The actual problem surrounding Kessler is that he's an elite fighter that should be included in P4P discussions and bouts versus other elite P4P fighters, but he's not because he doesn't pursue fights with "name" fighters. It's my guess that he's got the mentality of "I've got the belts, let the fights come me." That's fine, if status quo is all he wants. But, for the sake of all our ramblings and conjecture, wouldn't it be great if 6 months from now he was beating the brakes off Winky for a 4th, 5th round stoppage?

For now, I'm content with him just clearing out the division (Bute, Froch), and going to war with Jermain Taylor* (previously stated); there are just so many potentially good fights if you go up or down one weight class -

    Pavlik
    Abraham
    Winky
Paul Williams (He looked great at middle; would love to see him add to the controversy there. Maybe I'm overreaching with Williams at 168; he just seemed to make 160 with no problems)

    Roy Jones, Jr.
    Nard
    Chad Dawson
Tarver? (he might be through; can't see him being competitive with anyone of importance.)

and again, not negating the competion in his own weight class. There are just so many good match ups for him that it's annoying that he's taken two warm up fights.

Honestly, what boxing fan wouldn't want to see Kessler v Dawson, or Kessler v the Wink?

Kessler has been a real disappointment to me. Not only did he lose to Calzaghe, but it seem like mid way to the fight Calzaghe broke his will. Than Kessler agrees and then punks out of a fight against Edison Miranda. Straight coward move. To make things worse I think Miranda would of been a cake walk for him. But he rather fight some obscure fighter just to pick up a meaningless title. Kessler needs to fight a big name fighter in his next fight. No more bums

I'm with you on this one.. I hate seeing potential being wasted. And up until and even during the Calzaghe fight, he was the MAN... And he lost a pretty close (read competitive) fight to possible P4P #1 in the world... He should still be right up there and treated as one of the top guys.
Just he needs to take the top fights and show once again what he's capable off...
And you just know after even 1 or 2 big wins, he is going to have a HUGE following.. He's a great character, great guy, and great boxer. Likable in every way, and with his potential, should be taking A LOT more spoils from boxing than he currently is.

oh yeah, hell i forgot about that... not only does he not fight anybody of significance, he ducks some guy who would have been at best just a competitive fight.

Kessler cares more about paper titles then he does about actually fighting good fighters.

Kessler has a good resume, he is a great fighter, I agree he should be fighting better competition, but that doesn't change the type of fighter he is.

kessler sadly has a case of calzaghe syndrome:

    both from small countrys

both struggle(d) to get any attention stateside

both quite happy to slip under the radar as long as those half decent world title paydays keep coming along

both promoters even happier to allow the above to carry on as long as the fighters remain under contract to them

just like with calzaghe until HBO comes along kessler will remain a european stay at home fighting other europeans on showtime
    one dangerous horrible bloke

Zero argument here about the type of fighter he is.
