    Default Hey amat

What's your favorite Nickatina album? I ask because the only decent rap I've heard in years has been introduced to me by you.

So far I've got Conversations With a Devil and the Horns and Halo's trilogy. Any others you want to recommend?

Also, I know you're a big rap fan, are you into Jedi Mind Tricks at all?

CFH if u like listening to real rap than the crap u hear on the radio or watch on MTV or BET. Listen to mixtapes. it doesnt have to be a certain artist either it could be any rapper. Like Joe Budden his 1st album suked really bad. but the mixtapes he puts out are bangin. 50 cent last 2 albums suked ass but his mixtapes blows that shit away.

just listen to mixtapes and u will hear the difference from real rap and commercial rap.

It's hard to say really I kid you not Nickatina is the most interesting rapper I think I don't have a favorite but I have a least favorite which is his last Booty Star. Honestly though he's not an entirely album format rapper imo his only great albums are Conversation With A Devil and the other really worth listening to is I Hate You With A Passion because the whole time he is mad as fuck. Every album he has is solid though with the exception of the last which was total hit and miss.

He doesn't do the mixtapes much he did a few verses with Clyde Carson not to long ago that were sick. Tale of II Andres was a mixtape but it was nothing new except Sunny Kim but it still knocked.

The NY mixtape scene is crazy and it's expanded to the rest of the country but the NY Mixtape scene is insane.

I like Jedi Mind Tricks in fact I've seen him live at Golden Gate Park but I haven't listened to him extensively.

Still though, a lot of mixtapes have SHITTY producing a mixing that ruin the whole thing. The production is so bad on mixtapes sometimes I can't take it, some DJs suck. Budden is an anomaly NOBODY has went at mixtapes the way Budden has the past few years most all of that shit would be on an album.

Ya I like Nickatina. Have just DL'd a couple of songs because of amats other post. I am bout 2 years removed from liking rap. It was ofc all main stream stuff and everyone I knew was into it...but it fell to the wayside.

I think I could refind my liking for it again, but not so much the uber gangsta oriented stuff. Dunno...it just sort of all started to sound the same.

I don't really like most rap to be honest. I can pretty much count on both hands the rappers/groups I like. amat has turned me on to Lupe Fiasco and Nickatina though, and I like them both.

Conversations... is a great album, I like the 3rd disc of the Horns and Halo's Trilogy too. My favorite Nickatina song is still the first one I heard, Ate Miles. I love that beat. I've only heard 2 of Jedi Mind Tricks albums, but they're ok. I think there's two of them in the group...

I feel the same way as you about 99% of the rap I hear, but every now and again I hear some stuff I like.

Actually I think JMT is 3 people with 1 producing/djing but I only saw one of them in concert for Rock The Bells a few years ago. Conversations is a GREAT cd, really great but otherwise I would just reccommend downloading a bunch of songs at random and picking and choosing. Ate Miles beat is crazy but there are others too. He's got some crazy beats. Nickatina raps about nothing half the time, half his stuff is just him saying random stuff and that's Ate Miles, not sure that song is about anything. That's why I like him though.

check out how fucking epic this is.

    CFH,
Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in... I'm not sure what you have or what you've listened to but here are some of my fav. must have Hip-Hop/Rap albums.
I could list you all the "popular" ones like Snoops - Doggystyle or 2 Pacs All Eyez On me.. But I want to list some different stuff.

    Hip Hop:
Like Water For Chocolate - Common
    Blackstar - Blackstar
    Reflection Eternal - Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek
    Deltron 3030 - Deltron

    Rap:
    36 Chambers - Wu Tang
    Liquid Swords - GZA
    The Infamous - Mobb Deep
Only Built For Cuban Linx - Raekwon

I'll try and check them out, thanks Mick. I love 36 Chambers, I have that album. It reminds me of high-school, I used to listen to it in my French classes with my buddies walkman (yes walkman).

This might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between rap and hip-hop?

Well CFH, I'm almost certain there is no definitive answer.
Some might say it's about the artist, some say it's about the albums.
Some say it's about beats, some say it's about lyrics.

For me it's a mixture of couple of things...
Artist like Afrika Bambaataa, Common, MosDef, Telib Kweli, J5, Slum Village, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, The Last Poets, KRS One and so on and so on are Hip Hop. The instrumentals/Beats in the songs are different from Rap. Hip Hops influence is more from Jazz/R&B with messages and metaphors in the lyrics with thoughts and passages that expand your thoughts and take you to places.

Rap on the other hand to me is Artist like 2 Pac, Biggie, Big L, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep, Ice Cube, X-Zibit, DMX and on and on.
The instrumentals/Beats are not as jazz/R&B derived as in Hip Hop. The beats are harder meaning they've got a more "hardcore" beat like you can feel the intensity. The lyrics are more about street, violence, drugs, money, bitches & hoes. Not so much metaphors and passages.

As with anything else time has changed lot's of this. You also have Gangsta Rap which Ice-T does... He's also done just Rap.
Then you have Hip-Hop/R&B which The Fugees did...

Interesting, that's sorta what I've always figured, but I wasn't sure if there was a hard and fast definition of it.

    Ever listen to the Latryx?
