Thread: Legends who have suffered the least noticable damage

I was watching a few clips on George Chuvalo yesterday, and for a guy who was known as an easy target, a guy who got wailed on by Foreman, Patterson, Ali and Frazier (twice each), the guy seems to have gotten out of boxing relatively unscatched. I mean to hear him speak even at the age of 71 you'd never know he's had 93 professional fights and has been belted by some of the best and hardest hitting boxers of all time. He even goes around talking at colleges.

Jake Lamotta was another one who seemed to have came out of boxing relatively well. At 87, obviously his speach and mental capacities have slowed with age, but he still speaks clearly in interviews, despite having over 100 fights and given his style and tendacy to take punishment.

Who are some of the other legends that seem to be functioning well after decades out of the ring?

Matthew Saad Muhammad i see an interview with him he seemed fine with his speech and ETC, despite all the wars he had which is suprising.

George Foreman seems pretty sharp, no slurring of speech that I can detect.

Foreman seems to be good as previously stated by CGM


Lots of the older guys seem(ed) pretty on the ball from what I saw of them.

Maxim - he was sharp (from what i saw) up until his death in 2001

Willie Pep came out well. Although his style was to avoid unnecessary punishment he took some knocks from Saddler and co.

Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler are just fine, in comparison to Tommy Hearns. Poor Tommy's speech is thicker than a quick-sand smoothie

On an interesting personal note, a teacher of mine from my elementary school who helped me through some rough times, asked me not long ago if I would come and talk a bit about boxing and to some of the younger kids there struggling. Then in the same breath he asked what I knew of George and what I thought about him bringing him to the city if he is available for a talk. This was just a few weeks ago. I think it is pretty safe to guess my answer.

I'll post more about it when I find out more...but he is an idol of mine, and to be able to meet him would be hella amazing.

Good call on Foreman, SRL and Hagler, guys! And indeed, poor Tommy Hearns, he definatly came out on the worse end of the Fabulous Four

Ray Mancini is another one, he speaks the same now as he did back in the 80s, which is impressive given the wars he's been in.

Yeah he has an incredible story. The emotional and physical blows he's taken would have made anyone else crumble.

Good call ,I'm standing in Target buying one of his gazillion grills for a co-worker Sat. and could not get the vision of Holyfields 23 hard hooks bouncing off his head......on the box he is grinning ear to ear,just smiling away,no worries in the world .His commentary was ....unique.....but the man is all there,no doubt.
