Default Just want to clear something up on why Vegas takes 1st place for fight cards

It has been quite sometime now people here have not been able to understand why fights take place in Vegas over somewhere like Wembly.

Yes the amount of people that can actually attend the fight is much larger, Yes more money would be made on the gate alone but what many do not seem to understand is the money made on the gate would not be enough.

When a fight takes place in Vegas there is money made all around, for example.

Pacquiao/Hatton is coming up, In the UK at Wembly (Not sure exactly what it holds but we will say 80,000...ten thousand here or there will not make much of a dent in the grand scheme of things I promise you)

80,000 attending...The majority will be from the UK...More then likely 80% will be British....So now we have a gate of 80,000 people versus that of lets just say 5,000....But in Vegas all 5,000 seats can be jacked up to the point where they can charge twice for a bad seat on what Wembly can for a bad seat...so the 5,000 seats in Vegas will come to about what 20,000 in Wembly will....Yes we have a 60,000 difference but the gate is where the least of thiongs come into play

Second the Casinos are the biggest factor and to make the bigger difference Vegas in the betting capital of the world, also Vegas is packed with people 365 24/7 from all around the globe...many who want to see the fight as well so many people will pay to watch the fight via telecast at various casinos....

This money charged a % goes to the promoter again closing in on the gate differental.....

    Now the biggie...Gambling...Very important....

People waiting to see the fight live of via telecast will gamble...Gambling creates big money...attracting bigger names to the Casinos....Casinos are greatful for this and they in the future will want bigger fights held there and those who don't already will bid on them in the future upping the amount those who already do hold bouts to keep doing so....Those in contract with promoters for X amount of bouts will pay more to reup their contract....

Casinos help pay for the publicity of fights...Taking more expenses off the promoter...who in turn makes more money who in turn can affoard bigger purses in the future...

Aside from that the fighters are able to recieve perks for themselves, they are able to make appearences that they are paid to do be it by casinos or various other businesses, putting more money in the fighters pockets...

When all is said and done a fight that could bring in lets say

3 million in gate recipts at a larger venue ends up generating an over all
100,000,000 million by time everything is all said and done in Vegas between all the aspects involved....

Plus guarenteed future earnings of that caliber, plus more money in gambling for the Casinos on those weekends...And no one be mistaken the extra money made by the Casinos trickles into the scheme of the people that made it happen...Not in a illegle sense (because I know someone here wil start saying something about bribes etc)...But in Marketing, public appearences, advertising, and so on......

In the end it boils down to Dollars and cents...Why is it Vegas took over NYC as the fight capital of the world?...Dollars and Cents!!!!

MSG is the Mecca of boxing and always will be but only in excitement wise not in the sense of generating money for all those involved....

I am not trying to sound as if I think all fights should be in Vegas etc but just before anyone post or complains about the fight not being somewhere no matter what the venue...Because the fighter is from there just remember the fighter also has to agree on the venue and they know where they will earn the biggest payday or where the future will help them earn a larger payday by fighter there.....

The gate is only a drop in the bucket of the whole scenario

That's a great post that a lot of people needed to read. This is why Kelly Pavlik will fight in Atlantic City instead of Pittsburg or Cleveland. Even the smaller casinos, like Foxwoods, off similar advantages, just not on the scale of Vegas. This is why fights that would have been at MSG at one time are held in Atlantic City or Foxwoods in Connecticut. The opening of the reservation casinos all around country has been a boost for boxing, I think, but Vegas just takes the cake.

I agree with you mate...It is frustrating and it almost does seem unfair...The post was more or less just for those who seem to think that fights only happen there (or other places simular) because of favortisim, and the ever lasting....

"Why should so and so be allowed to have the fight there instead of where so and so is...Besides it fits more people"....

Just do not think some people understand it is a money thing and nothing else,....

Shit they would have them fight in Porta Potties if it ment more money drawn from it..

I always do find it hilarious when I read some UK poster talking about a fight can make the most money in Wembly. Poor misguided fools

Because they think in Gate dollars....Like I say in many aspects of boxing...There is a business side that goes with it....

BUT Some just believe the paydays appear out of thin air and the Arums, GBP and Don Kings have secret money making machines in their offices so they should do things because they want them too....

What I really find funny is when people actually believe the fighters have no choice but to go along with it

Anyone who can afford front and center at a Casino fight,WANTS you to see them blowing a wad at the tables during the weekend. The whole reason they bought front and center tickets is to show off that theyve got that kind of wad. Half the reason I almost never travel for fights, I never gamble on anything. So great,I get to see the fight for free. I know what it looks like when two people fight, people spar here all the time. If I want a really good look at a fight, honestly,I can see it better on TV. I allmost never work corners, because I know how hyperactive I am in a corner. So there's just no reason to go,except to show off that I can go.
And they dont just give plane tickets away, even though they might give fight tickets away

Still sucks for all those fans that would like to go and see a huge event though. Travelling half the way around the world isnt an option for most people and those fans will only be able to get their hands on a fraction of the tickets. Demand will well outsrip supply. Im sure the UK fans dont want to just get lumbered with the occasional style Lazcano fight, which really serves as little more than a pocket builder for Hatton. Certainly doesnt mean anything as an actual fight, does it?

There is no reason why it couldnt be held in the UK at 3am which would mean decent HBO US time and a lot of happy lager louts in a stadium. I understand the motivations for holding it in Vegas, but I do think certain fights dont need to be there. This is one of them. But as the powers that be have decreed it, we will just have to go with it.

It would be nice if more fights happened at places like Lincoln Financial, or Tropicana Field in the states, but there's just better money at the Casino's. And on top of that, the Casino's are way more willing to take a loss leader on the fight itself, because they know they'll make it back at the tables, and the betting.
If you book a stadium the way they used to,you better be sure you can fill the place. The stadium charges a flat rate, and your out that as a promoter, out of pocket. So you'd best be damned sure you have a fight that will fill the place.
Its led to a practice through most of the south, where part of a fighters pay is tickets to the event, you sell the tickets yourself, and you get a percentage. Why alot of mid to low level fights are kind of s-y is because of that, the promoter has to consider how many friends a guy has.
If you run an established hall like the Blue Horizon, its not as much of an issue, you can risk putting somebody on,because people will be there anyway. But if your booking a huge stadium, you better be sure

wow, I didn't think that anybody was stupid enough to think that the real money wasn't made because of the surge of tourism into the local economy?

Yeah, I wasnt disagreeing with Daxx at all. Its quite clear why a vast majority of significant fights end up in the casino venues. It would just be nice if on occasion those that supported a fighter got to share more in those BIG fight experiences. Of course, anybody can order it and watch it on the tube. But these types of Hatton fights are more like events than just fights.

The atmosphere of fighting in front of 80,000 fans must be amazing and Hatton will do it after the Manny Pac victory.

David Haye will get many thousands of fans at Stamford Bridge, 30,000+. Money can't buy the atmosphere and experience for a boxer.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
