Thread: Jones Jr P4P great. TODAY!!!

Take a look at Boxrec. You will see Jones Eeeeking our 25th in the P4P rankings! It has been a long time since he has been in there. How do you come off a devastating loss and still be P4P?

I am not sure what the heck they are thinking there. I have noticed that when a fighter takes a big fight, once in a while, they jump them up the rankings. Is this something they do for fight hype? Omar Shieka is no slouch really, but no one that propels you to such great heights.

On top of that, I think everyone saw Calzaghe let Jones get to the decision. He could have TKOed him with a flurry like Manfredo.

Boxrec is a joke.

Maybe somebody moved down and buoyed Roy up.

I think he'll beat Omar, but who hasn't.

Boxrec should just keep tabs on the records and not worry about rankings I do not understand their methods either. If there was 1 career that could have gone another path then it would have been Roy Jones, there would have been no way I would have let my fighter drop back down to lightheavy after fighting at heavyweight. It goes to show you that ego can be the worst enemy of a fighter because Tarver not only talked him down but did it by talking about his mother and let alone fight a rematch to a close fight. He should have stayed at heavy or won another title at cruiserweight and have people come upto him instead. What a shame the tailend of his career has turned into because he was 1 of the most gifted fighters of this generation. Omar Sheika is next? What a joke.

Totally agreed. If he wasn't weakened by the weight fluctuations I believe he could still be a force. Look at his contemporary Bernard Hopkins. Still going strong. He probably would be the same if it weren't for those career mistakes.

We all know boxrec ratings are not reliable and prettty much a Joke

I think that Jones' powers were not comparable to that of Hopkins. He was just brazing fast and used his reflexes to put the fight in his turf. BHop has been a hustler who never took anyone for granted in any situation. He has a slightly better defense than offense. Jones had a significantly better offense than defense. He could finish off a fighter when he chose, and he knew how to bring the pain.

Note: I am not a BHop fan by any stretch. And completely resent him being P4P #1 on boxrec more so than Jones being #25.

agreed Jones relied on his speed and lightning reactions and never really polished a textbook style like Bernard did. Therefore he was never going to last as long as Bernard when he lost his natural talents. Both in their primes Jones was quite a bit better. Now Hopkins is a lot better!

Yeah right, Calzaghe could hardly land anything cleanly, even after Roy couldn't only see out of one eye, still 90% of Calzaghe's punches were hitting Roy more on the gloves than on the head. After the first six rounds Roy was even with Calzaghe on the scorecards, or should have been, except round 3, the rest of them could have gone either way, Calzaghe was given way more credit by compubox than he deserved, and up until Roy's cut he was landing a lot of flush punches whenever he threw.

Roy Jones Jr was way more than just reflexes and speed. He had great combinations, you see in guys like Mosley and Berto that speed alone doesn't make every opponent easy to hit. Nobody except maybe Pacquiao in the modern sport was so skilled at opponening up an opponent, and landed with such ease, its because Roy could throw every punch in the book, he threw the punches when nobody was anticipating it.

Once again, speed alone can be timed, you saw it often when Mayweather was trying to potshot De La HOya, or when Berto was trying to land on Forbes.

I suggest everyone watch Jones-Hopkins, sure Hopkins wasn't as good as he is now, but he was still Hopkins and already a great fighter with great fundamentals, and when he got Roy on the ropes he was still barely landing anything, we've seen great athletes like Judah, Robinson, Ali, Leonard on the ropes and most guys regardless of speed get hit especially by an accurate puncher like hopkins, but there are a select who aren't just athletically amazing, but they know all the folds of the game like Jones, Mayweather, old Hopkins, Whitaker, Benitez which made them so elusive. Roy doesn't get credit for it, but he was one of the hardest guys to hit thats ever fought. He's the best counter puncher I've ever seen, the best at throwing combinations, and probably the most dominating boxer in the modern era. Athletic ability alone didn't make Roy was he is/was. His ring intelligence was second to none. Obviously he used and his style required that he used all of his athletic ability, but nobody maximized their athletic ability like he did.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I didn't really see the fight as even from 4th round on. I think the only thing Jones carried through that fight was that menacing smile he's always had. Not sure how he kept that smile through all those punches...

Calz best punches in that fight were right hooks to the body. It completely neutralized a Jones late rally.

Compubox or no. There is hardly a way to give Jones the nod for his "effort"

Boxrec also has Manny at #3 behind Vasquez and Hopkins. I like Hopkins at #1 though.
