Default Who else thinks Tommy Hearns' chin is underrated?

I've been thinking about how much people on here talk about Tommy Hearns' "Glass Jaw", but was it really so bad? I mean at the end of the day he was a Welterweight that moved up through the weights and was KO'd in thehigher weights a couple of times fair enough but only the great Ray leonard KO'd him at Welter and that was after 14 gruelling rounds in a fight he would have won in this day and age.

Then he moved upto Middleweight and another great KO'd him in Hagler but how many hard shots were thrown and landed in them 3 rounds? It must be a record for a world title fight!

Finally Barkley sparked him but he was past his best by then and Barkley on his day could do things like that unexpectedly. I'm not trying to say Hearns was Jake Lamotta but I do think that sometimes his chin is underrated especially when people just write him off having a chance in some of the made up "dream matches" people think of on here.

Umm yes and no his loss to Sugar Ray Leonard was stamina issues, he took bombs off Marvin Hagler before getting stopped. And he was KO'ed by Iran Barkley who was a massive puncher.

But then theres other times like getting wobbled by Doug DeWitt more than once, who wasn't a big puncher or getting floored by James Kinchen, then having to hold on like an octupus to survive because he was so badly out of it.

And he was badly wobbled against Juan Domingo Roldan but he wasn't a bad puncher. Overall theres cases both ways he did take great shots from Sugar Ray Leonard, in both fights and he was stopped in the 1st fight because of stamina issues.

And he did take great shots from Marvin Hagler, and getting KO'ed by the hard hitting Iran Barkley, is nothing to be ashamed of. But as i said then theres the flip side of him being hurt and dropped by non punchers like i mentioned above.

But overall no i don't think he had a glass chin, Terry Norris is a definition of a glass chin. Even though he was a fantastic fighter.

Nice answer. I often wonder whether it was his stamina that used to let him down a lot rather than his chin!

Tommy is my all time favorite fighter , and i wouldnt say he had a glass jaw , but he did have a dodgy chin , which was part of his appeal to me.
Hit or be Hit he was fantastic to watch.

tommy hearns was one of the first fighters i ever saw on tv and i thought he was incredible. tommy didnt have the best jaw ever but it certainly wasnt glass, his war with hagler is proof of that.

He had a good chin. I dont remember him going down from anything less than a big punch from a good fighter.

I think Hearns had a glass jaw,but his talent and skill was so great it didn't really matter.

Hearn's did have a vulnerable chin, so did Benn, Lewis, Bruno. Hearn's must have been British.

Hearns chin was alright. One of his problems was weight. By the time he fought Leonard to unify the welterweight crown he really couldn't make 147 anymore. In his bouts with Rodan and Barkley he really shouldn't have been at 160 anymore. They both came after he won the 175 lb. title by beating Andries. The Hagler bout well, blame that on a poor game plan or even not following the right game plan. I'm not saying Hearns was George Chuvalo or nothing, just that for an agressive puncher he did alright.
