Default Looking to buy a new car

I am looking to buy a new diesel car with a big family I need 7 seats and the S Max looks the better option than the Zafira. I normally buy used car but with the government backed scrappage deal offering £2,000 for my 11 year old banger, the new car option looks good. No MOT for 3 years, warranty, road cover for a year looks good. Only problem is the salesman will not go down from £15,750 for the lowest spec Edge version. It has fog lights and AC and I am in love with it but it is a damn lot of money and my other option is a year old Zafira, top of the range 10,000 on the clock and for £10,700.

I could help if you were buying in the US but not in the UK..sorry..If it were here I'd tell you to find the loan value, blue book/nada/ retail value and research the invoice price the dealer paid for the vehicle. This will give you a better idea of where to start negotiating. After that make sure you check multiple dealers. It always helps to have guys competing for your business. If the vehicle you are looking to buy is historically known for dependability than I wouldn't get the warranty but to each his own. Car sales is a high pressure market in the US so it tends to be a buyers market. Not sure what its like in your neck of the woods.

Hard time for purchases. They just announced yesterday that they are closing 3 of the larger dealer ships locally,1000 + nationwide and discontinued Pontiac,Sentras (??) and Hummer among others.

Dont know a thing about Autos across the pond. But if The salesmen wont bend on the price...walk away for now, they need you, especially these days. These guys are on commission and it may take more time but surely you can find a competitor to crunch the numbers on what you want.

I will look around awful lot of money, only the house cost more so do not want to rush it, but need it in a month or two.

what you really need to ask yourself is do you want to lose £6,000 on a car in one year.

i bought a 7 seater for £10,000 on ebay in germany and sold it just over a year later for £4,300 to a left hand drive dealership in the uk when i returned.

    it hurts

i personally would go for the year old version but if your not worried about losing the dosh go for the new one.

but check Auto Trader UK - Buy & Sell New & Used Cars, Car Loans, Car Insurance first to see if your getting the best deal as you can get some cracking deals with the credit crunch and all these days

Thanks, I have kept my car for 8 years, so I will run the new one into the ground and get the most out of it. I will probably keep it for at least 10 years.

I took your advice and went to another dealer and I managed to get the car for £15,700. This included the standard 3 year warranty and AA cover for a year.

The extras I managed to negotiate were a tonneau cover (not standard £120), road tax for a year (£185), mats (£60) and full tank of petrol (£60).

I will not buy another car for 15 years!

    Good deal or not?
