Default PS3 advice anyone - hard disk corrupted

have tried other forums but just on the off chance we have an inhouse expert...

Went to boot it up yesterday message 'cannot start the correct hard disk was not found' ??

I thought ok so rebooted - same thing. I went online finding people advising to remove the hard drive and reinsert. I did - same thing.

Rang Sony who talked me through how to get to the recovery menu. Tried it whilst they on phone - coul I get there coulf I fuck, just kept coming up with same error message.

They then said as its out of warranty the only option is to pay them £145 and they will take my old one away and give me a new one at door service.

Have looked online and some people say just get a new hard drive for like 40 quid and put in ps3. Thing is there's no way of knowing that will fix it ??

Am angry as the thing is onkly like 5 month out of warranty - this is firt console I have ever had go wrong.

Anyone any advice or had similar issues ?

    ta

ps even with new hard disk I will lose all my saved data on existing games I guess - can live with that but still not ideal

    Bloody technology !!!!!!!!!

That's screwed up.... I would suggest just continue scouring the internet over and over until you feel like you can't find anything that will help. Then do it again.. In the most unlikely spot you could find someone who had that issue as a carbon copy of yours, and found a way of fixing it..

It's typical stuff messes up just outside warranty.. Even when it is in Warranty, sending stuff like that back to get fixed is such a mess around as well...

Do you know what happened before that for it to stay that thing?? Did it get bumped, or did it get turned off while it was updating or something?

I think even with Warranties, companies should stand by their parts regardless, and if the disk f's up, they should fix it.....

At least Microsoft fixes the 360 if you are the original owner.

Sony fucked up on the PS3 they're losing money on every unit sold, and can't justify maintaining the equipment.

The hard drive should be an easy swap I would imagine though.

For the cost Sony wants to charge you, you could buy a brand new XBOX 360 Arcade version and preorder Fight Night Round 4, this may be worth mentioning to Sony.

    Cheers for advice guys.

I hadn't played it for about a week but nothing out of the ordinary had happened. I let the system automatically update when it kicks in every once in a while.

The thing never moves. There are quite a few people with same issue on the net out there - many from changing the drives themselves, but many like me too. There is a recovery menu that people say to use, this reformats the hard drive, but mine can't even get to that - again there are people out there in same position.

Am in market for a new tv at moment too so may see if any are doing a free ps3. I can survive without the saved data as I just used to stream most of my music and films to it from my pc anyway rather than store.

Will have lost all my unlockables and progress from games though which will be a pain.

If it was just £70 I would have no hesitation in paying it but I can't help getting the feeling I am getting ripped off at £145.

You got what they call on the PS3 "Bricked" It is common to the PS3 like the Red Rings of Death is to the 360. Make sure you transfer all existing files to another Hardrive by Cord or transfer to flashdrive.

You need to send the PS3 for repairs and more than likely they will send you a refebrished console. It really depends if you have still have it covered under warranty, Check your states lemon laws too. If it is not cover under the above. It will be bettter just to buy the newest High gig version console. Hope this helps

That's the problem of hard drive, it can be corrupted

I have a different problem when it accidentally fell from the rack when my son got tangled with the cords while playing beside me.

The cd drive wont spin, it could be your case so it gives false reading. I kept on restarting the f*&^ing unit until it finally able to read again.

    Sorry if this won't help

One screw and the hard drive can slot out, it's a star type screw head but you can get it out with a slotted driver. You are bound to be able to get another one on ebay or something with the SONY operating system installed.

Seems like bad design from Sony... on my Xbox you can just pop it off like a memory card almost.

Yes, best way to know if the the slot and its connection who has the problem not the hard drive. But i heard it is brand new mate!!

Try looking for another PS3 and put your hard drive to it instead.

I wonder if there's a designed anti virus for PS3 to read. I brought mine second hand so i don't know if it's included.

if i put another hard drive in my ps3 apparently it will reformat it , so can't do that with my mates

however i am reliably informed that I can out mine in his (oooerrr ! ) and it won't cause any problems - however if my disk works in his then its my PS3 thats fucked so will need a new one - but at least I will know.

If it fails then I will get a new hard drive and do what this guy does on youtube

    cheers guys
