Default What happen to UK Boxing??

    - Joe Calzaghe retired...

    - Ricky Hatton knocked out cold in the 2nd round...

    - Setanta goes under...

    - David Haye injured and pulled out from his biggest fight...

    - ITV bailing out from boxing...

    - Possible delay/cancellation in Amir Khan's title fight...

    ??

Good that there's still legit Champ Carl Froch to carry UK boxing...

It's just a rough patch... I dunno, I guess every country goes through it with a sport. It's not as if UK boxing has always been bad, in 2007 we had 8 world champions (or something like that)..

I think we'll start to see more champions coming from the UK around 2010.

The UK has done exceptionally well in recent years considering its relatively small size and population. These things have their ups and downs. I think it's just a tough run.

To be honest I don't think it's really bad.

David Haye is making noise at heavyweight and just because he's injured for 6 weeks doesn't mean anything. In fact it could help him by giving him another HW fight before Wlad.

    Carl Froch is flying high.

Amir Khan is coming off the biggest win in his career and so what if his fight gets delayed a few weeks ?

We have 2 European champions on the verge of world title shots in Jamie Moore and Rendall Munroe.

We have highly ranked by the WBC and British/Commonwealth champion Ajose Olusegun.

We also have decent fighters in Kell Brook, Ryan Rhodes, Kevin Mitchell, Matthew Hall and John Murray.

Clinton Woods and Junior Witter are back fighting for world titles soon.

We also have some successful olympians who have recently turned pro in David Price, Tony Jefferies, Frankie Gavin, James DeGale and Billy Joe Saunders.

From such a small country if you look at it like that it really isn't that bad.

Couldn't agree more..... I think British boxing is in a good state. Fair enough there is problems with T.V networks, but thats a media problem, not a problem with boxing. We have consistently produced fantastic fighters for as long as boxing has been a sport, and we will continue to do so. The future's looking good for British Boxing, end of an era with Calzaghe and Hatton, but the start of an exciting new one with some fantastic prospects coming through...

I agree with a couple of the posters, that we are actually in Great shape when it comes to our boxers!!

Khan and Haye alone cannot be dismissed as can't Froch..With the wave of new blood coming through we appear to be in good shape for quite some time yet actually!

Boxing is huge in Montreal and it seems pretty popular in Edmonton of all places, but aside from that it is definitely a minor sport here. I really think Steve Molitor had the opportunity to become a minor star in this country. Here on the west coast, he was being talked about on sports radio on the days leading up to the Caballero fight and it really seemed like he was poised to break out. The establishment of a non-Francophone/Quebec based unified champion would've gone a long way towards increasing boxings popularity in this country. The reason I say non-Francophone is that Quebec (for better or worse) is largely seen more of it's own entity than of part of Canada by the rest of the Country. Anglophones just don't seem to rally behind French-based fighters as easily as they do non-French ones.

I had to rep you for not posting about Pacquiao. Good topic and good responses. It does seem to me like they need some more prospects to step up into headliner status. Been the same bunch of guys getting notice, they need some new blood to step to the front.
