Default Disparity between boxing fans... general public

Maybe this has been touched on already... but I can't help but being astounded at the amazing disparity between boxing forums such as this and the general public when it comes to tomorrow's fight.

A poll here is split right around 50-50 between Manny and Miguel. And yet, the outside world has all but given the bout to Manny already. Cotto's a 3-1 underdog... but it seems like more than that when you read some of the stuff out there. I guess it underlines the difference between knowledgeable boxing fans and the casual boxing fan.

Hmmm... I kinda like it. All the more satisfying when Cotto's hand is raised in victory after the end of the fight.

I think the odds are well off for this fight, not that I am complaining mind you.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a pick 'em. There are far too many intangibles than to come right out and say "So and so is going to win easy. Bet yer house on it!".

I want Cotto to win, I think Cotto can win...but I'm far from certain. I'm sure most boxing fans are of a similar mindset regarding the fighter that they think might win. Only the huggers and those unfamiliar with boxing would say otherwise.

Im not to sure mate surely the more knowledgabe fans will be risking there money than people who have seen a few clips of the fighters??

Obviously we have seen much shorter odd fighters than 1/3 been turned over but all the money is for Manny he was 1/2 when the fight was announced so were not talking about $20 here or there being put down for Manny were talking about serious money for the odds to go from 1/2 to 1/3, so big players in the gambling game have spoke not saying it's gonna be that way but I think the book usually is the best indicator imo.

Well I noticed the same for the Pac vs Hatton fight... General people I know all were saying Hatton has no chance, he is a B grade fighter compared to Pac..

In the end they were right, and would have went of thinking they were boxing geniuses... Being a casual fan, you have the luxury of just picking the most popular fighter and saying how you know that they'll win blah blah, then if they do, you feel great and knowledgable and tell your friends how you knew.. If it goes the other way, you just ignore it and move on to other things...

Boxing can always go any which way, so even a casual fan who knows nothing can pick a fight easily and beat someone who has been in boxing for 50 years and knows everything.....

Clearly the public knows Pac more well than they know Cotto.. Their is much more hype about Pac's acheivements and streak etc, so the general public can easily get behind that image and say he'll be this Cotto guy....

A fan in the know will take into accout much much more, and with fights like these, knowledgable fans will always be able to make good arguements for both because these are 2 champions who don't lie down easily and both have beat the challenges in front of them...

I think 50/50 is about what I would expect from a forum of boxing fans, and 80/20 from casual fans who go with the hype..... Then you get the semi boxing fans, who go AGAINST the hype just because they have seen a Cotto fight or 2 and want to prove the know more than the casual fans by picking who in general public is the underdog so they can prove they know more than everyone else...

But most people on here will admit you can't really KNOW anything, and anyone who claims to KNOW is usually just uknowledgable themsevles... Most of the time... Even when you come out and say there is absolutely no chance this person will lose, you still have a freakin 50% chance that you are going to be wrong...

Your certainly not wrong about the general public and all, but the more I think about this fight the more I can't help but understand why Manny is a big favourite to win. It is a shame that Cotto is being undersold in that way, and that obviously a lot of the people covering this fight even haven't really done their homework on him... But I'm not certain the expected outcome should be all that much different even if they had. I do hope I'm wrong as I want to see a great fight tonight and I love upsets in general, it's just people seem to have the same doubts about Pac in this fight as they did his last two. And sure, Cotto is no Ricky Hatton.. But maybe no moreso than Hatton was no old Oscar, or DLH was no useless David Diaz etc. Fact is they were both still excellent fighters, Pacquiao is just a phenomenal fighter. I think he's a league above Cotto as well at this point.
