Thread: Ali v Holmes documentary

Watching Ali v Holmes documentary on ESPN and was interested in seeing Tim Witherspoon as Ali's sparring partner, also saw that Snowell, who was said to be Witherspoons friend. He was the gimp that became Tyson's friend and leech and infamously but a balloon in Tyson's eye to stop the swelling against Buster Douglas.

Also showed Holmes building his house and still with his wife, great man and champ.

Ali had a moustache in training and was slowing deteriorating physically, it was sad. they said he starting taking Thyroid tablets nearer the fight where he lost weight but also could not do more than 4 rounds or run. Very sad, reminding me of Shane v Pac Man in a weird way.

Do not know if anyone watched it but these were my thoughts.

Yeah I remember Snowell being there for the ALi camp. He already knew how to be a leech in 1980 and would do the same with Tyson in 1990.

Most of Ali's camp were leeching off him too, do not buy into the fact they were looking after him. Angelo could have done more and pulled Ali out earlier.

It was on ESPN classic recorded it but not had the chance to watch it until now.

It was like a boxing 24/7 but the film maker said none of the companies wanted to show it.

the documentary was on 1 of the espn channels in the uk a little while back. i enjoyed it, holmes came across as a nice bloke.

You are right Larry did come across as a good person. did not rubbish Ali and did not realise but he was crying after he beat him in the dressing room.

I found two links to it here, it took me a while to download it though. I thought Ali and Holmes both came out of the documentary looking like good people. Neither of them deserved to go through what they did.
The guy who said "because Ali's a Muslim he has a body of a 28 year old". I wanted to punch in the face the blood sucking leech! poor Ali had the body and reflexes of more like a 48 or 58 year old man by that point.

Yes I agree I guess that's what you call a loyal friend standing there watching your friend for years train for a fight he was not up to.

I was wondering could this Ali beat the Fraiser of that time?

It was earlier said by one of the people in that training camp and i've seen this on an Ali documentary but it slips my mind, but there was another fighter in Ali's camp I forget his name but he was a lightweight i believe. But he said when Ali tried to imply to him that they were Thyroid tablets, that he was very up front with Ali that he knew they were not thyroid tablets, they were L-dopa, which was used to treat parkinson's syndrome, because his father had used those kinds of pills so he is very familiar with them. So that it dawned on him that "my god this guy has parkinsons and is still fighting?"

That makes it even worse.

I've heard this story so many times, but it still staggers me that Ali was granted a licence to fight.

He didn't require any neurological tests to decipher that he had a problem, anyone could see that the life & expression had diminished from his face & his speech was much quieter & slurred.

Larry Holmes also showed what am amiable guy he is & what a class act he is after all.

Larry's wife said that it was as if Larry had dropped off the face of the Earth, as nobody talked about him any more.

Poor Larry has always lived in Ali's shadow & even now, when he gets some limelight, it's about his fight with Ali.

I'll look out for this. Only thing is, though i respect he was a great fighter, every time i've come across Larry Holmes he always seemed to come across as a bit of a tit. I once saw him being interviewed and when he was asked about Ali he just wanted to talk about how much better he was and how he would have beaten Ali at any point.

I will definitely look out for this though, hopefully it can change my view on this great champion.

Holmes is very bitter. He also downplay and tried to diminish George Forman's accomplishments in the sport.

It's funny you mentioned it, because I remember I saw this video yesterday and Holmes is talking bad about Foreman's accomplishment. He's basically downplaying Foreman being the oldest HW champ.
