Thread: JuanMa Lopez and Yurokis Gamboa - are their careers progressing too slowly?

I want to hear both sides of this. I really wanted to see them fight Caballero and John. I just feel they are ready to step up the competition. Am I wrong to be disappointed by Teon Kennedy or Jason Litzau as their next opponents? I'm a fan of Litzau and Kennedy, but they aren't on their level. And it's not like JuanMa or Gamboa have been in so tough, they deserve a gimme opponent. Right?

I'd say Lopez is a step ahead of Gamboa in overall development. He's had better comp definitely and has been closer to the brink to to comeback and learn himself. Think his boxing and patience has come a ways. Gamboa...man I am just not buying the complete package yet. He looked to be rushed too quickly in my opinion off sensational power but he looked like he hit a wall last time vs Salido. Explosive and fast but didn't seem to have a polished 2nd gear once Salido refused to fall over and selling out for power got him dropped on his azz, again. End of the day 12 rounds may very well be what he needed, Salido was solid.

Gamboa I would like to think could be further along he has gone a bit slowly but right now I think his team is still just trying to get him out of a few bad habits he continues on with....Gamboa still has too much amateur in his style....JuanMa is right where he belongs at the moment I would like to see Gamboa step it up a bit

I'm a lil annoyed they didn't face off in '10

These 2 should be promoting their 3rd fight already (trilogy).

I swear, boxing is getting pussier every year.

Daxx, thing is he beat a 35 year old RM. He was still RM, don't get me wrong. However, I just never had any doubt that JuanMa would win that fight. Caballero, John, Gamboa are tougher challenges IMO and I guess I feel like he is ready for those fights, and the fact that I'm seeing him fight Teon Kennedy, is a little disappointing.

I guess we disagree, but I'm sold on Gamboa. I say he beats Chris John and JuanMa. Maybe he is being moved at the right speed though.

Very good analysis.

I like Gamboa better than Lopez myself, but Lopez is certainly in the lead as far as accomplishments goes after defeating Marquez.

Gamboa is AWESOME but he goes into every fight with seemingly no game plan and just relies on his natural talent, speed, and athleticism to get by.

IMO i'm ok with either guy facing Litzau, i mean both were interested in fighting Caballero and no one in here would be complaining if either guy was fighting him, well Caballero just lost to Litzau, and although IMO he has no chance against Lopez or Gamboa, just like Brinkley did with Bute, Jason Litzau has earned his shot

but yea i wouldn't mind seeing Gamboa step it up a bit more, fight John or another big name at that weight

I agree with you dont get me wrong...(As far as the RM topic is concerned) I knew JuanMa would win I personally thought he would stop RM quickly by the 4th because RM can be drawn into a war and JuanMa hits so hard....But really though when you look at his resume since 2008 he has not just beaten but dominated for the most part

De Leon- chin always suspect yes but he was on one hell of a roll at the time

Medina- who at that time only lost a decision to Bautista

Leuvano- A former world champion

Concepcion- Tough tough fighter

Penalosa- Great fighter though on tail end of career no walk over..

With that list in just over 3 yrs it is hard to criticize him especially since he has been using these names as stepping stones!!!! Could he do more? In truth what more is available right now for him unless he jumps up in weight...Chris John may outbox him...No make that would outbox him John is a master boxer with no question mark on that but he is a soft hitter and even a questionable chin like JuanMas could withstand it and he would be all over John who is not the sturdiest chin around...As for Celeste I have always found him to be over rated and after losing to Litzau a fighter who would get blown out by both JuanMa and Gamboa It reinforces my opinion of him

As for Gamboa I like him as a fighter better then I do JuanMa why not too sure maybe his personality, maybe because he reminds me a bit of a younger Mosley but not so polished with the way he fights with his hands out at times...Maybe it is because his chin is also a question and he has the tendecy to get hit more often but that is my personal opinion of him...Liek I said he has some flaws that need fixing by his camp and mjust a few tweeks Gamboa can go from a good fighter with a lot of potential to a great one with ease

Gamboa is like a young Roy Jones with a little less polish...In the sense of mjust pure athletic ability a reflexes of a cat truly gifted for sure...Like you saifd though he just seems to go in and see what happens with no gameplan I think at this point if he met JuanMa it would hurt him...But then again Gamboa has some power of his own and JuanMa is no stranger to the deck so hey you can't count Gamboa out at all

They weren't interested in fighting Caballero before the Litzau fight, lets be honest. If Caballero was an easy night out, JuanMa would have fought him a long time ago. You make a good comparison with Litzau and Brinkley, but Bute got grief for fighting Brinkley, even though Brinkley deserved the fight. Same should go with JuanMa. I guess maybe we give him a pass on this one and hope his next fight is more compelling.

I really believe that Caballero just had an off night against Litzau and that he's still a top featherweight.

IMO a 35 Rafa Marquez beats Caballero from what i saw last time out, and also i'd say he give Gamboa just as much hell

I disagree. I believe Rafa loses to the next real fighter he faces. But, we can both agree that he'd beat Jason Litzau or Teon Kennedy. Right?

I think they are both coming along nicely.

Lopez has beaten enough top fighters to be top 5 p4p imo. Donaire beat Vic and goes as high as number 4 p4p.

Lopez has beaten Ponce, Penalosa, Leuvano and Rafael Marquez, that's a hell of a resume for someone still on the up.

Gamboa has only had 19 fights and is already holds the WBA and IBF superfeatherweight titles. Sure he's not beaten anyone to get them but being a double world champ inside 20 fighs is hardly being moved along slowly.

Besides, technically he has things to work on and so shouldn't be rushed. He has the belts, which means he'll be on a nice little earner every time he fights, he can afford to give himself another year before he fights the best in the world imo.

agree on the second part, but honestly i wouldn't be shocked to see Rafa beat Caballero
