Thread: Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara?

Lara just announced this on his Facebook page.

I hope this comes through, this would be a fantastic fight.

An improvement on Ishida definitely, but I also think this is a massive risk for Williams in his first comeback fight. He clearly doesn't do well with elusive southpaws & I don't think he'll have the size to blitz Lara out of there a la Mitchell & Quintana II. I'm calling Lara ftw

How does Lara win this? Williams throws 80+ punches a round and Lara throws half that.

I know Williams is a lousy technical fighter, but does Lara do enough to counter and take advantage of that? He's so deliberate.

Am I mixing my Cubans up?

Lara can definitely win this, he is very smart and accurate Williams is exciting but wild, his reach keeps it interesting.

If Quintana could do it, sure could Lara. He would win by being a counter puncher. But still, I think Williams activity would be too much for Lara. Williams points.

Let's hope Williams shows something a bit new then. It's a fair matchup and I think Williams can win, but he needs to guard that chin a lot more now.

That's a fight I'd love to see. Dangerous fight for both fighters, the work rate and reach of WIlliams vs Lara's innate magical talent. If Williams comes in prepared, that could be an all sparks fight.

But do Lara have a better name then Ishida for HBO to cancel that fight? People know Ishida kOed Kirkland. What did Lara do?
What is Lara ranking?
IMO, bad decision by HBO.

I hope Cintron get Ishida now!!! Same date for Cintron to come back.

I totally disagree. This wasn't about Lara, this was about HBO requiring that even Al Haymon boxers need to face someone competitive to be on HBO. Lara is a more competitive fight than Ishida.

I'm not rating Lara on this one, I'm with you Ant. Lara has beat no-one, and his best step up was his last outing against Molina, who hadn't fought in a year, and in my opinion he lost, despite getting a draw.

His skill in the ring is what makes this a competitive fight, true he hasn't faced much resistance yet, but the skill set and ring smarts are all there, he has been on American TV already many, many times on ESPN2, Showtime and HBO, Ishida has one appearance so far. Boxrec will not tell you the whole story on Lara. I don't have anything against Ishida, but Lara has more media backing him.

Is this a main event HBO doesnt give a steamy pile about a bout being through and through competitive so much as it's high exposure, and that's what this is. Don't drink the kool aid. So a guy who gets pounded into dust and a guy who is coming off , IMO, a lucky lethargic draw and a one round puff piece over DELROY RAINES is suddenly worthy of main event?! Cue the old school Flava flav jam.

Ishida earrrrrned his spot and has done time in 'championship' rounds. Execs shouldn't be so damn hesitant to introduce a unknown boxer, and maybe we would enjoy expanding our horizons.

Cintron is fighting on the same night, but on a different card. He'll be fighting Carlos Molina on the Rios vs Antillon card on Showtime.
