Default I Wish He'd Loved Boxing

In his last two fights 1970's Panamanian featherweight strapholder Ernesto Marcel defeated Sammy Serrano and a 22 year old Alexis Arguello. From those two wins alone one knows he was serious business. Then Ernesto retired, at 26. Why? Just didn't like the sport enough to continue. Really too bad. The footage is grainy but watch this guy bob, weave, slip, potshot, circle, confuse and outthink Alexis. He was a maestro.

Don't want to take anything away from Marcel but Alexis looks still quite green in this from what I can make of it. Not sure he would have been able to outpoint Arguello had the fight taken place a few years later on in his career. Can't knock him though, had he truly loved the sport he would have been even better and that is a frightening thought.

This fight was a BIG learning experience for El Flaco. He went back to school on it and became a much better fighter. Less that a year later Olivares was only able to befuddle him for 7-8 rounds before Alexis began to walk him down.
