    Default Injured Hand

Alright guys, I have a new dilemma that is physical. I just want it to be known that I don't have health insurance, so I am looking for informative comments

I first fractured my right hand roughly 6 years ago. I had it in a cast for about 2 weeks, when I was on vacation the thing got soaked and I ended up PULLing my hand out of the cast, had no tools strong enough to cut it. When I got home I had it x-rayed again and they said it was fine, just splint it.

Anyway, present day and I am in the gym doing a drill where we throw 400 punches, run a lap, throw 300, run, down to 100 punches.

Well the same right hand is really in bad shape now. It happened a week ago, at first there was a lot of swelling and pain, now it's a dull ache. I feel the pain in the ring finger knuckle where the finger joins the hand, there is some tenderness in the metacarpals as well.

I can flex the hand, make a weak fist, but I am just worried it may be fractured again? Would it still be swollen if it was broken, and isn't the bone stronger after it heals from a break? I don't have health insurance now as stated, and I would hate to do the E.R. just to hear it's sprained. How much longer should I wait before going to the doctor?

Any advice? Icing it for now, ibuprofen, but I feel like something isn't right. There really isn't much swelling, just dull aching pain.

The pain will go away. Take a look at the back of your hand, palm flat. Are the knuckles further toward your wrist than they used to be? Pay attention to how you throw and land your punches to stay off those outside knuckles. This will come from swinging your right- if that is the injured hand- or trying to land a left hook palm down. Spring those outside knuckles every time.

That's crazy! And gross at the same time, my pinky knuckle of my right hand is like 1/8th inch closer to my wrist than before. Also, if I take the first 2 fingers of my left hand and rest them on the last two metacarpals of the right hand, I feel the tendons flex with the fingers like a rusty hinge.

I definitely need to focus of straighter right hands. I do have prominent middle finger knuckles that are significantly higher than the rest, is there any worries there, or just try to land flush with the 1st & 2nd knucks?

    Thanks Grey!

My middle knuckles are both very prominent and I've had no problem with the left, and I quit having problems with the right once I started being sure of my technique and distance.

so as far as distance with the right goes, where should I be in relation to keeping my hand safe/having power?

I found that being too far away and landing the right hand with my arm extended aggravated my knuckle. Extending your jab fully- as far as you can- will generally put you in a pretty good spot. That may seem counter-intuitive but it is true. Also, turning your hand so that the proper knuckles land, regardless of the range. The double end bag is good for this, hitting it with different punches at different distances and getting your hands right.
