St Swithun's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithun's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain nae mare
Looks like it's going to be a roasting summer.
Can you take 40 days of this heat?

You maybe right, weathers gone strange, reversed ocean currents - Elnino is back again to haunt us down here.
Nice for the cricket anyway. Watch out for English fair skin, that Sun is very different these days.
Apart from the fact that it features in a Billy Bragg song, I know nothing about St Swithin's Day. Another forty days like the last week, and I'll be a nocturnal hermit, and will sleep on a bed of ice packs.
I think St Swithun was a bishop (Winchester?) who insisted he be buried outside the church in the graveyard with the paupers so that the locals could walk on his grave. They carried out his wishes but them some eejit dug him up and made a posh crypt inside the church and then the town was hit by a massive thunderstorm which was sort of like his curse. Something like that. Anyway it's bloody hot Today on St Swithuns so we will now get 40 days of it . That means the UK is doomed because we will melt. 40 days of rain is just our usual summer but 40 days of sun? it's like the 70's all over again.
