Your longest drive there shouldn't be more that a couple of hours. What is in Norwich?

As Ryanman says Brighton is a notorious place for gays.

I'll come meet you for a beer or two if you fancy it Greg. You planning on doing any stargazing while you're over here? Once you start getting away from London its usually no more than a short drive to somewhere far enough from the light pollution of the towns to get a good view.
Like smashup says, for getting around London itself you can't beat the Oyster card, access to all the buses and the tubes, and you don't have to worry about calculating what the cheapest way to get around is, either a travel card or single ticket etc, it does the maths for you. As you say, based on the prices of trains today it is probably cheaper to rent a car, and long distance coach routes are just a pain in the backside to find.
