Default Who is boxing's next celebrity or superstar?

I just got done reading the thread about how Donaire just fired Robert Garcia as his trainer and some poster said Donaire was an overrated celebrity fighter with an overrated celebrity trainer. Except, that Donaire was never a celebrity or even known outside of hardcore boxing fans.

The average person and sports fan of other sports don't know who he is. Boxers that are celebrities are usually the superstars of the sport. Think Leonard, De La Hoya, Tyson, Ali, Foreman, and of course, Pacquiao and Mayweather. Those are the celebrity fighters of the sport. They are internationally well known.

Amir Khan, I thought could have been the next one, if only he had an iron chin to go with his athletic gifts. But anyways, who is the next celebrity or superstar of the sport? One that will crossover where the average person and average sports fan of other sports will know? Is there even one on the horizon?

I agree with that and I've said it myself and that's what happens to media creations who are not what they are said to be. Garcia has a brother making noise and has a gym. Apparently that makes him a good trainer. So good in fact that he trains guys by phone in the most important fight in their career. Its nepotism gone to far. Donaire may not have been the cross over star that Manny and Floyd are but he was being touted as the next big thing and Manny's heir apparent. He was and is a one handed fighter with power who got there by beating up people half his size and by fighting 2 and 3 divisions south. Even now he's probably a lightweight or at least a Jr. A flash in the pan that had his 15 minutes.

Its to bad that boxing on mass does not pay attention to anything below 126 or Roman Gonzalez might be a cross over star.

Keith Thurman could do it if he keeps winning. He talks well in front of the camera and is easy to understand. He knows boxing from the amateur level up. He knows what he wants out of boxing, in other words he seems to have a plan for himself in boxing.
Thurman might not become a super star but I have the feeling he's going to do well for himself in boxing, that is unless he runs into that piece of shit, celebrity trainer Robert Garcia. You know, the trainer that turned Miadana into a jabbing fool, the trainer that took him past Broner, the trainer that helped make everyone want to see a rematch between Floyd and Maidana, that piece of shit, celebrity trainer.

We make superstars out of complete idiots lets be honest. A person to exceed the sport that makes them, rare. Oscar, Manny, Mayweather...the next Sugar rinse repeat. Agree IamInuit totally on Donaire, that got carried away in the same clamor for next *fill in blank here*. Him pushing weight and non development was fogged over with smoke and production. Simply put let a kid carry his own name before he pretends to shoulder others.

Also on Roberto Garcia as a trainer he has shown his ass but is not without substance. Dude was a quality boxer and frankly had more 'depth' than many of the guys he trains. Few of the fighters turned trainers match up today and its a new breed who couldn't pick their clock or '24-7' special. Put John David Jackson there...blows him out in every category!

    Canelo.
I like Thurman but afraid he could implode.
Danny Garcia if it was not for his dad.

i honestly dont know who will become the fighter of this decade. nobody really stands out to me yet, but that could change. maybe lomachenko can get a few fights under his belt and become a superstar. i agree that thurman has the personality and style for it but i just dont see him becoming a top 5 p4p fighter ever.

Keith Thurman does not have the right personality. It is not only about winning.
