overrated I reckon

its alright. not great but solid. he had his 2 years of glory of being near the top.

He beat Pavlik and Williams who were the most dangerous fighters at the time. Apart from that its nt great

yes them two had good records, and like you say if you ignore those off his record then his record isn't that good


and if you look at his record, he only beat them two at a second attempt which kind of brings his record down a bit

Like a lot of fighters, it looses its luster without time and weight reference points. Considering he started late. Got Ko'd by Margarito. Rebounded, got jobbed a few times, rebounded and took on the fighter in williams everyone was avoiding (possibly getting jobbed in the first fight) and then scoring one of the most impressive Ko's in recent years. After that considering the weight climb to fight Pavlik , he did well. A few brits and other euros, and moving up again to fight a puncher at 168. He has an decent record.

I guess the question is, how could it have been better? What were the things that he could have done but didnt to make it better. Avenge the margarito loss (after he was decimated by pac and shane)? fought cotto closer to his prime before the injuries at 154 (while cotto was being drubbed by pac, floyd, and trout)? Taken on a bloated hopkins at a catch weight? GGG? WardHow many of those were viable money making options at the time where he could make them happen.

- I think cotto earlier could have been done. would it sell probably not as much.
- Margarito and Cintron Matches probably would havent sold and been credit-less wins
- GGG? Ward? possible but the weight disparity and the risk for the amount of money migh have been low. He could have tried though. and may have if he beat cotto. who knows?
- I think matches against trout, canelo and cotto may have bolstered his record a little.

The 2 year retreat back to homeland after Margarito loss was odd. Was that on short notice? Its a good record with one huge asterisk...he won twice in one fight vs Cintron

Yes, his record/ legacy if he didn't fight again. What fights/moves could have been made instead or in addition within the time / reasonable weight class range to have made it better. Unless we're going purely on numbers. I can think of a number of people that he maybe could have fought to maybe make it better but a few of those lose their significance at the time the time they could have happened due to what those fighters were doing at the time and taking into account Sergio never really ducked fighters.

Sergio started late and was a cyclist and athlete rather than a skilled boxer. He lost to Margarito but came into his own late in his career with battles against Paul Williams. Since the knockout of Williams and to 11th round against Junior he was the best middleweight in the world.

And, someplace, wherever he is, Holman Williams is at least as pissed off as Ken Overlin.

Sergio did the best he could during his reign as a top p4p fighter. That was the extent of his record though. It wasn't too impressive before that. So overall, his record isn't great but had a couple of great years.

It's a decent record and especially for one who started boxing relatively late. Sergio did what he could and has some very good wins on his resume. He simply got old, injured, and ran out of time. I've been very impressed with Martinez since first properly seeing him against Cintron.
