Default My thoughts on Calzaghe v Lacy - please read

Sorry to post a topic that you are probably all bored of by now but i havent had a chance to get on the computer in a couple of days as i have been at my girlfriends and got home late last night. I have been thinking of loads to say about this fight so now i will add my piece.

I was unsure of who would win between JC and Lacy, mainly because JC just hasnt looked good in the last 2-3 years and Lacy has been impressive. This was a fight that could have gone much differently depending on which JC showed up.

I remember about 6 years ago i bought a video called the Brit Pack which was a sports network video biggin up the British fighters who were doing good at the time. Naz, Ryan Rhodes, Brodie, Robin Reid and you guessed it Joe Calzaghe. There was clips of interviews with JC and he impressed me with his confidence and the fights they showed made him look excellent. Highlights of Eubank v Calzaghe and JC against Sobot. There were others but these are what i remember. I had only just got in to boxing in a big way then so this was the first i had heard of JC.

The following years after watching this i continued to follow his career, not in a big way just reading the odd report and checking the results. The first fight of his i saw in a long time was against Brewer and i thought it was wicked the way they just went at it for 12 rounds blew me away and i couldnt wait to see my mates to talk about it. Bewer was getting on a bit but JC showed he wouldnt back away from a scrap.

I didnt see the whole mitchell fight except for the second round but i do know since then he has frustrated the hell out of everyone by not being in meaningful fights instead choosing to fight people i had never heard of - Kabrery salem?? if thats how you spell it. i never went out of my way to watch his fights and started to consider myself not to be a fan of Calzaghe. I even wanted him to rematch Reid or fight Woods and lose just so i could say serves you right.

When Calzaghe hurt his hand against Ashira in which was one of the most boring fights i have seen i honestly thought it was bollocks just so JC didnt have to fight Lacy. When the fight was rescheduled i wasnt 100% sure it would happen and i even kept checking sky sports on my phone just to see if JC made a late withdrawal even though i had now started to believed that JC would win. When i started reading various magazines about the build up to the fight i thought Lacy would win and show JC career to be a waste as he never achieved what he should have but as the months progressed i started to change my opinion as JC was showing a new attitude. Gone were the excuses of why the big fights had not happened and who he wanted to fight next to earn recognition blah blah blah this s what i had grown tired of so it was refreshing to see JC really up for this.

Anyway I missed most of the boxing sat night/sunday moning because i was hungover and fell asleep. I caught the last round of Alexander v Mcdonagh - that meant so much to Wayne. I also caught some of the Barnes fight but fell asleep again i didnt wake up until JC just climbed through the ropes which was lucky.

The way JC took the fight to Lacy from the off was amazing Lacy just didnt know where he was and he was lucky to hang in as he did and not get stopped. Massive heart and big respect to Lacy. Mcguigan said he doesnt think Lacy will ever be the same again. I dont know about that but if he is it is going to be a long hard road back.

The point i really wanted to make from all this is that i have slagged off JC on this forum as well as in discussions with my mates after watching his fights. A little while ago i didnt think we would ever see him in a big meaningful fight and i thought that all his boasts would come back to haunt him and he would be one of the fighters we talk about in 20 years who never realised his true potential. Beating Lacy is not the be all and end all of his career he still needs to do more but he has convinced me that he belongs among the worlds elite. I am not one of these people who suddenly say i believed in JC all along and thought Lacy had no chance because that is just fake. I was surprised by how Lacy was unable to do nothing in the fight but this just shows how great Calzaghes performance was, the way he ducked those big shots and darted in and out with big combos was breath taking.

I have disrespected JC many times because of his apparent unwillingness to step up and prove he is true number one but Joe you have my respect now and i will not be so quick to dismiss you again. I just hope he doesnt waste the remainder of his career by either pricing himself out of big fights or taking easy options. This is the time to build. I am by no means a JC a*** kisser but respect where it is due.

Last word goes to Lacy who put up a very brave fight and you couldnt help but feel sorry for him seeing him walk into combination after combination and looking all bruised and cut. He seems like a genuine nice bloke and i wish him all the best. The way he was sat on his stool after the fight spoke a thousand words he reminded me of Vargas sitting there after DLH had bashed him. He looked emotionally as well as physically destroyed. He sacrificed a lot fighting Calzaghe and I just want to express my gratitude for him baring his soul and us taking pleasure in his dismantling. He took his beating and i have a newfound respect for him which will always be there. Thanks Jeff i believe it will take about 2 years but you can become champ again.

I dont want to hear people say that the fight came to early for Lacy, inexperienced or not he was the IBF champ and his career had built to the point where he was considered by many to be the best supermiddle in the world. If he hadnt of fought Calzaghe when he did he would have been criticised for it. At the end of the day he himself believed he was the best and he felt he was at the right stage to fight for the unification. You cant expect anymore than that.

I hope this hasnt bored who ever reads and if nobody reads it then that's ok i just felt i needed to express this and i'm sure i've missed out some points i wanted to make but the main things are there so that'll do.

Thanks for the response guys - Boxers sacrafice a lot and to do it all in front of millions of people the way JC and Lacy did Sunday morning can do nothing but good for the sport and earn them respect and then some - i think there was a glimpse of everything that's good in boxing on show sunday morning. This goes for every fighter who win or loses gives their best.

good post? how is it? clearly this bloke jumped on the bandwagon, when joe beat eubank, then due to lack of top quality opposition and innactivity after the mitchell fight, he jumps on board another bandwagon like many other calzaghe knockers pre lacy fight before doing a full circle and now hes great again. to top it all off he couldnt even stay awake to watch the fight, massive fight fan! cock!

    reread his post Angora.. purns

He is simply admitting too and explaining why he had the wrong opinion of JC. You probably also believe ignorance is bliss. Just in case you also have difficulty with that too...
Ignorant - knowing little or nothing; unlearned, unaware.

    , ashley....a really good posting....

i supported calzaghe all the way through the build up to the fight (as you were all probably sick of hearing from me!!), but even i too had my anxious moments...

i thought about joe's inactivity, the lack of recent quality opponents, the dreaded hand injuries.....and then i though about lacy's rapid rise and the awesome heavy handed ko's...

but then logic would come back again and i would appraise calzaghes superior hand speed, boxing skills, experience, ability to take a punch etc etc. in all these areas i knew calzaghe was superior to lacy and if calzaghe wanted the fight enough and stuck to the game plan i wanted (which was to stick and move and always be a moving target....using those superior skills) then he could and would win....

but the manner of the win surpassed even my hopeful expectations. he moved wonderfully, firing off those rapid, quick fire combos while lacy threw punches into thin air...round after round and round...
the pace never let up....he governed lacy for a full 12 rounds and hit him at will. awesome...

a very pleasing fight, performance and result...
