Default Chris Eubank says he'll come out of retirement!

Apparently, the singer Morrisey has said that Eubank told him he'll have a comeback fight against Roy Jones on ITV if Jones can beat Calzaghe! WTF.

Well he is bankrupt now so it's always a possibility. Eubank is probably my all time favourite fighter, frustrating as hell sometimes but his style was just unique.

I watched a rerun of Benn Eubank 1 earlier in the week and I think at his best he was the greatest suppermiddle Britain has ever produced.

It would be a shame if he did come back and get hurt, but if he got himself in shape I reckon he could still make a few quid.

Maybe they could pursuade Nigel Benn to step into the ring with him one more time. I'd rather watch that then Hopins Tarver!

When I was the president of amateur boxing in NY in the eighties, there was this wild Brit fighting out of the Jerome Boxing Club in the Bronx. He was a limited fighter who was a willing gunfighter and would step in with the top talent we had anytime it was offered to him. While never becoming a NY champion he was always fun to be around. When his mentor and trainer, Adonis Torres, passed away the boy was devestated. He apparently went back home to continue with what we thought was to be a limited career. Of course he grew up to be Chris Eubank who I can tell you had plenty of fans in the Big Apple.

    Jim

Well Eubank was a shadow of his former self at super-middleweight, unfortunately and for obvious reasons. Apart from the odd brilliant performance (Rocchigiani, Wharton) that is.

Such a wasted talent man, I thought Eubank was the guy who could of beaten Roy Jones back in the day.

    Default Eubanks

    Hi,

He was abit of an oddball, a young Bronx boxer who spoke like an English gentleman! Always dressed immacculately with his designer clothes from England. He could be spotted at amateur boxing shows around NY literally all the time, usually not competing but observing. I spoke with him quite regularly circa 1988 at a gym so I suppose I did know him personally at that time. Back in the amateurs I remembered him as a limited slugger but a real handful for anybody. I hadn't seen him fight for about three years though when I saw him sparring at Morris Park Boxing Club, at that time he was taking bouts in England and flying back and forth from New York to Brighton U.K.

He was fiercely improving skills and had clearly improved. I was told he was sparring every day, at different gyms. I was told he continued this relentless sparring for the rest of the year before disappearing for good. So he had a lot of ring experience by the time he was starting to make noise in England. A friend of mine Pat Vercase said he had never seen anybody so dedicated to improving their skills. He'd also been working with a martial arts guy called Walter for a couple of years and developed this very weird style that none of the guys at Morris Park could work out, he was getting faster and more flexible and robotic by the day. He said to me "Don't worry, I'll be fighting for the world title one day", ofcourse we laughed. A few years passed when I turned on the boxing one night and there he was in his championship win over Nigel Benn, could'nt believe it.

I've seen footage of Chris' first four pro fights, and his style was suprisingly normal. He held his hands up high, threw left jabs and right crosses and the occasional left hook. He looked to move and counter-move and stay in control, it seemed. And even though he was a light-middleweight, he looked more like a beanpole welterweight. They were close, competitive fights - Eubank's first four fights. And Chris clearly looked nervous back then, and did no posing at all.

I heard that Chris then met that guy you speak of, Walter Johnson his name is (who was in Eubank's corner a lot in his pomp) and spent a year trying to advance his style. He took his friends and family from Brighton across the Atlantic to watch him fight a guy called James Canty - where Chris says he displayed his newer style of hands down, wider variety of punches, reflexes etc, as well as jumping the ropes and doing lots of posing and shit he mentioned his manager died soon after that Canty fight though and he kind of gave up on boxing for about six months?

Theres deffinitly world class fighters that Chris could still outfox but anyone with a high workrate would be difficult for him.

Light heavy weight would be his ideal weight as his normal day to day weight doesnt exceed the Cruiser limit (especialy since they upped the limit).
Carl Thompson is a well regarded puncher and Chris had no problems taking some clean shots off him but its just the basic body strength that they have over Chris.

I think an ideal opponent for Chris would be Tarver, I think hes a little overrated because his biggest wins were over faded old fighters and he also has only Two different names on his resume in 3 years. tarver faded badly against Jones who was scared to do anything and Chris always had good stamina

I don't think he will make a come-back personnally, he was a great fighter in his time, and I think if he made a come-back it would tarnish him, and he cares to much about his ego and what people think of him to come-back, plus he's got the most annoying accent and lisp!

He was just announced bankcrupt a few months ago, sounds like he's desperate for money like Tyson which is sad really.
He is 39 years old (i think) and i don't want him to come back, he might get hurt.

It's funny to hear you UK guys discussing this, just shows everyone is sentimental and a bit stubborn about their own fighters.. Saying he could come back. Are you kidding? He couldnt beat anyone.. His last fights were 3 losses in 97 and 98, and he had some knee among other health problems then anyways.. This is far worse than anyone saying Tyson should keep fighting, or Jones, or anyone. OBviously it wasn't a serious statement. Maybe he'll fight as a joke against a bum somewhere.
