Thread: When Fighters used to "FIGHT"

Amazing to think Mancini only had a 6 year career and was retired at 24 (not counting the two comeback fights years later).

Rocky Marciano had an eight year career. 1947-1955, a different era and another mindset.

Rocky didn't have the nutrition and... umm... special "vitamins" that athletes had decades later, otherwise he'd have had a much longer career.

Marciano would whip any heavyweight in any era up to 30 pounds heavier than himself, i.e. up to 214

Were these guys the equivalent to Gatti v Ward, not world class but provided entertainment and heart?

Mancini vs Frias was one of the best world title matches ever, over in one round!

That was the fight I thought I was going to see, so Mancini must have been in a lot of wars?

Yeah he was a true action fighter, good pressure guy too. He had a lot of wars. The Arguello fight was brutal, as was the Duk Kim fight obviously. The two Bramble fights were good. He had a lot of wars, it's good he retired so young because he's still very articulate now.

I think he was a lot like Vinny Paz in his prime, just less of the flashiness. A great action fighter for sure.

Chacon was former world champ at 126 and 130. He fought Olivares two or three times, Bazooka Limon 4 times, Boza-Edwards, Arguello, and Little Red Lopez. He started at 122 and was past his best by the time off this fight, while Mancini was young and a very strong 135. My friend sparred with Chacon for this fight. Sometime coming up soon, if it hasn't already happened, there is a fundraising benefit being held for him in So. California, at a golf course, I hear.

I prefer to say when(boxers) use to fight.

Salvador Sanchez boxed with an up in coming Azumah Nelson -who became the professor.
Fought with Danny Lopez brutal wars..
He fought guys in their prime and up in comers.
Boxed, then beat the hell out of Wilfredo Gomez who was young prime and undefeated.


Even though i am not a big Ray Leonard fan, he boxed and could fight when he needed.

Evander was an underrated boxer imo because he ended up fighting instead of sticking and moving.

And the gatekeepers back then could box well and bang like Bobby czyz. Not a great fighter, but when pressed he never backed down.

Elite fighters were more than just boxers. They were fighters when pressed.

Mancini was made of what fighters wanted to be made of but it wasn't the brawl with Bramble the made him slide in the end although he fought really hard, it was the death of Kim just like the death of Paret changed Emile Griffith's style permanently. Conscience slows fighters down as far as ring deaths are concerned.
